Text A. DRUG ABUSE
In the end of the 20th century the number of drug users in the Russian
Federation increased greatly. According to the opinion of specialists, the number of
individuals abusing narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances may exceed three
million people in the first decade of the 21st century. The number of deaths among
rug addicts is also growing. During the last five years the number of deaths

among drug abusers increased by 2.9 times, including those caused by overdoses
and intoxication – by 3.7 times.
A large drug market, convenient geographical location of the country for
transit of drugs and some other reasons contribute to the growth of drug
smuggling. So these days Russia is a target for expansion for international drug
traffickers.
Drug dealing is one of the most profitable types of criminal activities. Drug
distribution involves thousands of common people as couriers and petty dealers
who are driven not only by the desire of easy and rapid gain but also by difficult
material condition*.
The reduced spirituality in the Russian society, fashion of drug consumption
spreading among youth, growing expansion of international drug business into
Russia – all that promotes further narcotisation of the country’s population.

Text B. GAMBLING
Gambling is the curse of the humanity. On the one hand, gambling business
is very profitable. In the United States the receipts from the illegal gambling each
year surpass the total revenues of America’s seventy-five largest industrial
organizations combined. Owners of casinos try their best to make people gamble.
According to statistics there is one slot machine in Las Vegas for every eight
inhabitants. There are not even clocks in Las Vegas gambling casinos.
On the other hand, doctors say that gambling is a disease. Most people can’t
stop gambling if they start. When prevented from gambling, compulsive gamblers
often experience physical withdrawal symptoms resembling those undergone by
heroin addicts. The reactions range from restlessness to shakiness, severe
headaches and diarrhea.
Gambling is illegal in some countries, for example, in Holland. But people
can’t or don’t want to stop gambling. Once police arrested 12 respectable old
ladies (the oldest was 87) playing cards in one of the Hague’s most respectable
districts. The stakes were high and the police seized several thousand guilders. In
the eighteenth-century English gambling dens, there was even an employee whose
only job was to swallow the dice if there was a police raid. It looks strange but
according to Gambler’s Digest, more cheating takes place in private, friendly
gambling games than in all other gambling games combined.
There are different stories about people who lose everything or make a
fortune while gambling. Madame de Montespan, second wife of Louis XIV, once
lost 4 million francs in a half-hour at the gambling table. Sir Miles Partridge once
played at dice with Henry VIII for the bells of St.Paul’s church, won, and collected
the bells.
Every Englishman knows the proverb “Early to bed and early to rise makes a
man healthy, wealthy and wise”. But there is nothing about gambling in it…
