SPORT IN OUR LIFE
Sport helps people to stay in good shape, keeps them fit, healthy and makes
them more organized and disciplined in their daily activities. Thousands of people go
to the stadiums to support their favorite sportsmen and even more people prefer to
watch the games on TV. But watching sport events and going in for sport are two
different things. My favorite kinds of sport are hockey and tennis. I’ve been playing
ice hockey since I was six. The more I play the more I like it. I spend a lot of time on
ice in winter. There is a good tennis court not far from my house and when ever
I have a chance I go there with my friends. A great number of people play and watch
tennis. Tennis tournament at Wimbledon is known all over the world. But football is
certainly the most popular game in the world. I like both winter and summer sports.
Sport makes me fit and helps me to study for many hours and not to feel tired. Every
year a lot of modern sports centers and ice stadiums are built in cities and towns of
Russia, to say nothing of numerous sports-grounds next to educational
establishments. Due to the fact that Russian sportsmen have shown 18 good results in
the international championships and tournaments, youth has been interested in figureskating, boxing, swimming, tennis and volleyball.
Answer the questions:
1. What sport games do you play?
2. Do you think sport develops people only physically?
3. People like football, don’t they?
4. Are you good in skiing?
5. What kind of game is basketball?

SPORTS IN GREAT BRITAIN, THE USA AND RUSSIA
The British like sport very much. They are fond of all kinds of sports. Many
sports were invented in Great Britain and then spread throughout the world. Sports
became popular long ago. In the 19-th century sport was organised at public schools
so that young people could develop their physical abilities. But shortly afterwards the
idea was borrowed by businessmen who started to organise football and other sports
for their workers. From the 1960s commercial companies began to sponsor different
British sports and activities. The national British sports are: football, golf, cricket,
tennis, racing, darts. Like everyone else the British adore football. Moreover, the
Englishmen invented it.
Nobody can say for sure when people started playing football on the British
Isles. It is important however, that current uniform rules of the game were settled
only in the 19-th century. At that time there was a great debate, whether one could
use his hand to kick the ball or not. Those who wanted to permit the players to carry
the ball with their hands united to form rugby. Rugby is played by teams of 15 men
with an oval ball. Those who insisted on playing with feet and head only had the
majority and that was the beginning of football as everybody knows it today. In Great
Britain and more often in the United States football is called soccer to distinguish the
game from American football, the game that has much in common with rugby.
Soccer, played almost in all countries, remains one of the most popular games
in Great Britain. Each team consists of field players and one goalkeeper. Only the
goalkeeper is permitted to take the ball into his hands. The game lasts for 90 minutes
with a 15 minute break between two halves 45 minutes each. Most British towns and
cities have a football team. Every year, each team in England plays in the Football
Association competition. The two best teams play in the Cup Final at Wembley
Stadium in London. It is one of the biggest sporting events of the year.
Another traditional British game is cricket. Unlike football cricket is not widely
spread outside the British Isles. Cricket is a summer game, it is played in schools,
colleges, universities. Cricket is a very long and a very slow game. There are two
teams. Each team consists of eleven men. The “bowler” throws the ball, and a
“batsman” hits it with his bat.
Tennis is also very popular in Britain. Two different games that do not have
much in common bear the name of tennis — lawn tennis and table tennis. Both
games first appeared in England, but today the British prefer lawn tennis to table

23
tennis. Every summer, in June, the biggest tournament in the world takes place at
Wimbledon. This world centre of lawn tennis is located in a suburb of London.
Millions of people watch the Wimbledon Championship on TV. Table tennis
originated in England in 1880. But the British players are not lucky in table tennis
international championships.
Englishmen like all kinds of racing. Horseracing, motorcar racing, boat racing,
dog racing, donkey racing are very popular in England. The most famous boat racing
in England is between Oxford and Cambridge. It first started in 1820 and has been
held almost every spring since 1836. A lot of people come to watch this competition
between England’s leading universities.
Americans are interested in different sports and activities. The major American
sports are ice hockey, baseball, American football and basketball. The large choice of
sports in America can be explained by the variety and size of the country, its different
climates and the people’s love of competitions of any type. The seasons of the “four
major sports” often overlap.
Baseball is the most popular summer sport in America. But the first baseball
games start in warm, sunny regions like Florida and Arizona in winter. The first
American baseball match was held in 1839 in New York. There is an opinion that
baseball comes from a much older game, played in Europe for many years. To play
baseball, two teams of nine players are needed. The “pitcher” throws the ball, and the
“batter” hits it with a bat. Americans start playing baseball young. There are
“leagues” which children of eight can join. The top players become big stars.
Americans play most international sports, but they do not play football in the
same way as the rest of the world. American football is a game that does not have
much in common with soccer. The players can run with a ball, touch and push each
other. The field is not traditional, and even the shape of the ball is different.
American football players wear helmets on their heads, because the game is very
dangerous. American football teams have eleven players.
Basketball was invented in the United States. A schoolteacher designed the
rules for a game that his students could play indoors. There are only five players in a
basketball team. Usually basketball players are very tall and they show that basketball
can be exciting. Ice hockey is America’s favorite winter game. It is very fast. It can
be dangerous and its players wear helmets too. Other sports and activities attract
millions of participants and spectators in the USA. These are swimming, tennis,
marathons, bowling, cross-country skiing, skating, and badminton. Now triathlon is
one of the most popular sports in the USA. It comprises swimming, bicycle racing
and long-distance running.

24
Many sports are popular in Russia. There are many stadiums and public sports
facilities here. Numerous national and international matches and competitions are
regularly held in our country. They attract large numbers of fans. Most of the
important games are shown on TV. Football is believed to be Russia’s favorite sport
in summer, while many young people play ice hockey in winter. Our country has
been successful in different sports, especially in ice hockey. During the Olympic
Games the Russian athletes prove the reputation of Russia as world’s leading nation
in sports. The national team of Russia has many times won the World Hockey
Championships.
In Russia much attention is paid to organized sports and this shouldn’t
overshadow the many sporting activities which are part of daily Russian life. School
children spend their free time playing football, basketball and other sports. In winter
many Russians go in for skiing and skating. There are many skating rinks in the
cities.

WHAT IS BETTER WATCHING SPORTS
OR PARTICIPATING IN SPORTS?
Nowadays sport and recreation have become an important feature in the
people’s life. But tastes differ and different people have different attitudes to sport
and recreation. Some people prefer to watch different sports events, others choose to

25
participate in them actively. Watching other people playing is a popular leisure
activity. Large crowds attend numerous national and international occasions; millions
watch them on television.
Among the most popular sports are football, hockey, basketball, tennis, and
motor racing. Many people assemble to watch these competitions. World Football,
Hockey and Basketball Championships attract people from all over the world who
cover great distances in order to support their favorite team. Wimbledon
Championship is the most important tournament of lawn tennis, while Grand Prix is
the major motor racing competition. But of cause the most important sport event is
the Olympiad that takes place every four years.
Most of the important games are shown on TV. In many countries there are
special TV channels that broadcast sports programmers for 24 hours. The major
sporting competitions, such as the Olympic games, are shown on the central TV
channels attracting millions of people who can be thousands of kilometers away from
the event. Popularity of sports differs from country to country. In Latin America
football stadiums are always crowded, while the Russian fans are so disappointed
with the poor performance of our football teams that many prefer not to watch the
games even on TV.
I can not agree that it is good to disapprove of watching sports events and
approve of participating in sports. The desire to follow the example of sports stars
induces people to take up sports that they used to watch seriously. For example many
young Russians are fond of playing football. Even if the Russian teams are far from
being the best in the world, Brazilian, Italian and French players become the example
that young people try hard to follow.
In the past decades people’s involvement in sport and recreation have grown
considerably. Now there is a large variety of available opportunities and facilities.
Sport is the best and the shortest way to health and fitness. Increasing number of
people are involved today in activities that help them keep fit and enjoy life. Physical
recreation tends to be informal and non-competitive and may include, for example,
cycling, boating, jogging. Dancing has become a very popular recreation. Many
Russians have started learning Latin American dances, such as samba, rumba, chacha-cha.
Sport and recreation facilities provided at schools and universities enable
young athletes to develop their talents. In Russia schools and universities participate
in sports tournaments, for example in football and basketball. Many facilities are
made available by local clubs and parks. There are commercial facilities, which
include bowling centers, skating rinks, tennis courts and riding stables.

26
According to the latest figures the most popular activity of all is walking. It is a
well known fact that walking for an hour every day is more healthy than rare and
irregular participation in any of the more active physical activities. To keep fit some
people attend special classes or take part in aerobics or yoga, do some kind of weight
training in a gym. Others play football, badminton, tennis.
Evidently participating in sports has more advantages than simply watching
sports competitions. At the same time these two kinds of activities are tightly
interconnected. Professional sport is important not only for the professional athletes,
one of its missions is to propagandize and popularize sports activities on the everyday
level. At the same time it is always an individual preference. And only the individual
has the right to decide what is better for him. But whatever the choice is, the pleasure
is undoubted.
Answer the questions:
1. Do you like to watch sports events on TV?
2. What sports do you prefer to watch?
3. Do you play football or tennis yourself?
4. Do you admire any athletes?
5. Do you have any friends who go in for sports professionally?

RUSSIAN CUISINE
To my mind, delicious food is one of the greatest pleasures in our life. I've been
living in St. Petersburg since my birth and can tell you many interesting things about its
restaurants of Italian, French, Chinese, Japanese and Indian cuisine. However, first of all
I'd like to share some secrets of typical Russian cuisine with you.
Russian cuisine is indeed original. Its distinctive feature is not only in original
recipes but also in the fact that it reflects a certain way of life. Russian people usually
have meals three times a day. In the morning they have breakfast, in the afternoon —
dinner and in the evening it's time for supper.
Let us start with breakfast. This meal doesn't usually take much time to
prepare, due to the fact that people, as a rule, are in a hurry for work, school or
somewhere else. It may include just sandwiches, fried or scrambled eggs, corn flakes

27
or muesli and various kinds of porridges. It can be cream of wheat, oatmeal porridge,
rice or buckwheat porridge. It is more common for Russian people to drink black tea
with jam or honey but there are ones who prefer coffee in the morning. You may
think there is nothing special in this set of dishes. You are right. But it was a
description of a typical working day breakfast, when people have little time to
prepare something. Now I'd like to call your attention to breakfast of a day off.
Have you ever tried traditional Russian sirniki? I'm sure, if you live in Russia,
at least once in your life your grandmother or mother prepared them for you. Nothing
can be compared with sirniki, made of fresh village cottage cheese and fried on a pan.
They are usually served with sour cream and sugar. Perhaps, the only dish which is as
delicious as sirniki is blini or pancakes. In Russia they say that the thinner blini are
made the tastier they are. Blini are served rolled with a variety of fillings but the most
delicious ones are pancakes with jam, honey and sour cream.
A traditional Russian dinner consists of three courses. It is the main meal of the
day. First of all snacks are served. It can be caviar, herring, salt cucumbers and
sauerkraut. All these salt dishes are served in order to excite the appetite. In general
Russian cuisine is famous for its pickles.
Then comes the first course — soup. There is a great variety of different soups
in Russia but the most famous is “borsch”. Shchi, rassolnik, shchaveleviy soup and
cold soup — okroshka are also cooked in Russia. Of course, it is not the whole list of
traditional Russian soups, but these are the most popular ones.
After the soup the second course follows. It usually includes meat or fish and
garnish. The Russians prefer freshwater fish like carp and pike. As for meat, it may
be pork, beef, veal, lamb, turkey or chicken. The most famous meat dishes in Russia
are zharkoye (stewed beef with potatoes, onions, carrots and garlic seasoned with salt
and pepper), beef Stroganoff (the dish consists of pieces of beef served in a sauce
with sour cream) and cutlets (the dish made of minced meat). The main course is
usually served with garnish — mashed, baked or fried potatoes, pasta or vegetables.
Russian people often eat pelmeni (meat dumplings) for the second course. Pelmeni
are often cooked by the whole family. Firstly, the filling of minced meat is made due
to the particular recipe, then they roll out the pastry and after that everybody sits at
the big dinner table and makes pelmeni. Sometimes the preparation of this dish takes
almost the whole day. Very often people cook pelmeni for a holiday. The Russians
eat everything with bread but sometimes pies are served instead of bread. These pies
may be stuffed with various fillings: fish, spring onions and eggs, meat, chicken,
potatoes and mushrooms. Sweet pies are served for tea. They are usually stuffed with
different fresh berries or jam. Every housewife has her own cooking secret.

28
As for the third course, it is usually a drink — compote, kissel or mors. In old
Russia there existed another popular drink — Medovukha which is derived from the
word “honey” (in Russian it sounds as “mjod”). Sometimes this course includes
desserts. It may be ice-cream, baked apples or some fresh fruit.
Supper is the longest meal of the day, since it is time when the whole family
can gather at one table and discuss some news. Russian people usually have a
substantial meal for supper. It may be fried potatoes, potatoes in their skin with
herring, fried fish or chicken. But there are also people who prefer light supper such
as cottage cheese with sugar or milk and jam, an apple cake called “sharlotka”, or a
potato cake, or some vegetables. It will depend just on a person's preference.
It is worth saying that Russian cuisine is famous for its natural products.
Russian people are fond of gathering, drying and using mushrooms and all kinds of
forest berries in their dishes.
In my opinion, Russian cuisine is one of the most varied and delicious in the
world but tastes differ. As far as I know, people from other countries consider
Russian people heavy eaters not only because of the amount of food we eat per day,
but also due to its fat content. Anyway, if you are not keen on Russian cuisine, it is up
to you to choose any other food.

ENGLISH CUISINE AND NATIONAL CHARACTER
The neighbours from the Continent never tire of making fun of English cuisine.
The internationally popular French comics about Asterix the Gaul contain an episode
in which he and his best friend Obelix, who is famous for eating a lot of food, go to
England where the two heroes struggle to eat normally, but even Obelix cannot cope
with English food which is tasteless and liberally coated with mint sauce. There is
also the famous joke about the international contingents in heaven and hell: in hell
the chef is an Englishman (the police are German, the lovers Swiss, the mechanics
French and everything is organized by the Italians; there are, of course, any number
of variants on this joke).
The primary distinguishing feature of English food is also its main problem: its
purpose is to satisfy hunger and not to provide pleasure. The English do not make a
cult of food, although many of them do take pleasure in their food.
The English themselves have an inferiority complex about their cuisine and on
the whole are deprecating about it. If your English friends invite you to lunch they
will straight away present you with a choice of going to a French, Italian, Indian or
