MY ROOM
We live in a three-room flat. I think the best room in our flat is mine. My room
is my study and my bedroom. It is very nice and cozy. There isn't much furniture in it.
There is built-in furniture in the room. On the left there is my bed and desk. There
are a lot of drawers in the desk for my text-books, notes, pens, pencils and other
things. On the right there is a sofa and a built-in wardrobe. In the right corner there
is a comfortable arm-chair. I like to sit in the arm-chair and read an interesting book.
There are some shelves with books in my room. There are Russian and English books
there. There is a big carpet on the floor. There are some posters with my favorite

I invite them into my room. My room is a nice place for rest and work.

MY FLAT (1)
My parents got married in 1983 when the Soviet Union still existed. As you
know, at Soviet Union times almost all young couples were given flats free of
charge, which looked absolutely similar. The same happened to my parents. They
were given a three-roomed flat in one of the sleeping quarters of our town. But my
mother tried to make our flat unlike the others.
There are three rooms, a hall, a kitchen, a bathroom, a toilet and two balconies
in my flat. When you enter my flat, you appear in a long hall where you can find a set
of wardrobes and a big mirror.
On the right hand there is a kitchen. Our kitchen is not very big but it is very
cozy. There you can find all the appliances you need in a modern kitchen. There is a
fridge, a gas cooker, a microwave oven, a food processor, a mixer, a coffee maker
and so on. Also there is modern furniture, a kitchen table and four chairs. The walls
are decorated with embroidered pictures. There is a big window in the kitchen and
that’s why this room is always full of sunlight. My family likes to spend time in the
kitchen because it is the warmest and the most comfortable place in my flat.
Going along the hall, you will enter a living room (also on the right hand).
This room is my father’s favorite. He likes to have a rest there, lying on the sofa and
watching TV. There is a set of wardrobes and bookcases on the right side of the
room. On the left side there is a sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table between
them. There is also a big TV set in front of the sofa. There is a big window and a
balcony in this room. My mother likes plants very much and that’s why this room
and the balcony are full of plants.
Next to the living-room you can find a children’s room. It used to be my
sister’s and my room but as my sister lives separately, this room is mine now. This is
the smallest room in the flat but it doesn’t diminish its advantages. There is a
wardrobe, a sofa, a bookcase, a desk with a computer on it and a dressing table.

14
There is a fluffy carpet on the floor. There are posters on the walls and pot plants on
the windowsill.
Our bathroom is painted in green colors. Our bathtub and a wash basin are
yellow. Our towels and bathrobes are of different colors, the rug is blue, so that’s
why when you enter this room you have an impression that you are inside a rainbow.
The toilet-room is really very small. There is nothing except a toilet and a
small cabinet next to it.
So, let’s move to the last room in my flat. It is at the end of the hall on your left
hand. This is my parents’ room. There is a double-bed, two bedside cabinets and a
big wardrobe in this room. It is painted in warm colors and it is always a pleasure to
rest there, reading a book or watching TV, which is on the wall. There is the second
balcony in this room.
As they say, “My home is my castle”. So, my home is a real castle for me and
I don’t want to have another one.

MY FLAT (2)
We have a nice flat in a new block of flats. Our flat is on the fourth floor. It has
all modern conveniences: central heating, gas, electricity, cold and hot water, a lift
and a chute to carry rubbish down. There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and

16
a hall in our flat. The living-room is the largest and most comfortable room in the
flat. In the middle of the room we have a square-table with six chairs round it. To the
right of the dinner-table there is a wall-unit which has several sections: a sideboard, a
wardrobe and some shelves.
At the opposite wall there is a piano and stool before it. Between the two large
windows there is a little table with a color TV set on it. Near the TV set there are two
cozy armchairs. A small round table, a divan-bed and a standard lamp are in the lefthand corner. This small table is for newspapers and magazines. My father is used to
having a rest sitting on this divan-bed reading books, newspapers, magazines or
watching TV.
The bedroom is smaller than the living-room and not so light as there is only
one window in it. In this room there are two beds with a bedside-table between them.
An alarm-clock and a small lamp with a pink lamp-shade are on the table. In the lefthand corner there is a dressing-table with a big mirror. In this room we have a built-in
wardrobe with coat-hangers to-hang clothes on. There is a thick carpet on the floor
and plain light-brown curtains on the window.
The third room is my study. It is not large but very cozy. There isn't much
furniture in it, only the most necessary. It has a writing-table and an armchair before it.
In the right-hand corner there is a bookcase full of books, magazines and newspapers.
A small table with a radio is standing in the left-hand corner. Near it there is a sofa with
some cushions. In my opinion, the study is the best room in our flat.
But the warmest place in our flat is the kitchen, I think — the place where the
whole family gathers every evening not only to have supper together, but also to
speak and rest. I like the English proverb: “My home is my castle” because my flat is,
indeed, my castle.

MY DAYS OFF
I go to college six days a week, so I have one day off — Sunday (I'm not lucky,
because some other students have two days off). During the week I am very busy, so
I like to have a rest on weekend.
I am not an early riser, so on Sunday I try to sleep well and never get up before
9 o'clock. I enjoy staying in bed, when I don't have to hurry anywhere. We have late
breakfast at 10 and watch TV. Usually we have something tasty: meat salad, fried
potatoes, chicken, cake or pie. If the weather is fine, I usually do not stay ay home,
I and my dog go for a walk. We often go to the park and play there. If the weather is
rainy and gloomy, I stay at home and watch TV, listen to the music, read books. After
dinner we go visit our grandparents or relatives, or just simply take a nap. Sometimes
when my friends call me we go rollerblading near the Opera theatre. I like
rollerblading very much; I think it is a lot of fun. In the evenings I like to watch video
and music programs. There is a big armchair in my room right beside the lamp with a

something special on weekends: go to an art exhibition, to the theatre, to the concert.

Hobby is what a person likes to do in his spare time. Hobbies differ like tastes.
If you have chosen a hobby according to your character and taste you are lucky
because your life becomes more interesting. The most popular hobby is doing things.

singers. Also, I like to watch music programmes on TV. I want to keep up with the
news in the world of music. Of course, I like to spend my spare time with my friends.
We talk about all sorts of things (politics, teachers, and girls). We discuss films,
books, TV programmes. In fine weather we like to be in the open air. We find a nice

HOLIDAYS
People all over the world celebrate different holidays such as New Year’s Day,
Christmas or Easter because these celebrations are a part of their culture and people
try to preserve these traditions. Besides, they usually celebrated holidays connected
with the history of their country, for example Thanksgiving Day in the USA or Guy
Fawkes’ Night in Great Britain. Apart from this, some people celebrate such special
occasions as graduation, getting a job or retirement because these are memorable
events in their life. And of course most people celebrate such family events as
birthdays or weddings because they want to please their relatives and to keep up
family traditions.

20
Personally, I enjoy celebrating holidays. For me, a holiday is not just a day off
but a special occasion and I usually prepare for it beforehand. First of all, I think that
holidays are an important way to keep up our traditions. Besides, it’s a good chance
to bring the family together and to meet all your friends and relatives. What is more,
I like this perfect atmosphere behind celebrations when my Mum cooks a festive
dinner and people give and receive presents.
My favorite holiday is of course New Year because I always get a lot of
presents. Besides, I like the atmosphere of this holiday as there is a great air of
expectation. Traditionally, on the thirty-first of December we decorate a fir-tree and
put presents under it. I also enjoy the family meal, which is a central part of our
celebration. When the Kremlin clock strikes twelve, we wish each оther Happy New
Year’ and then we go for a walk and let off fireworks. It’s a great time of the year.
The holiday that makes me especially proud is Victory Day. It commemorates
the victory of our country in World War II. On this day we usually put flowers at the
tomb of the Unknown Soldier and honor the memory of my grandfather who died in
this war. I am especially impressed by the ceremony when people all over the country
keep silence for a minute in honor of those who died to defend our Motherland.
I think it’s one of the most important traditions in our country and we must keep it up
to remind our children of the terrible consequences of wars.
