UNIT 1.4. REVIEW
1. Speak on your research paper dwelling upon the following issues.
1) composition of the dissertation;
2) problems discussed in the introductory part;
3) topicality and novelty of your research;
4) methods of scientific analysis applied;
5) your findings (anticipated results);
6) assessment of the results obtained;
7) practical application;
8) possibility for further research;
9) your reports, articles on the problem under research.
2. How complex is the language of each article in Unit 1.4. ? What words
in particular are usual or interesting? Is there any technical jargon?
3. Explain which article you prefer and why. You may make your decisio n
based on any criteria you choose (e.g. how entertaining /clear
/informative/ stylish the article was) as long as you make it clear what
criteria you have judged the articles on. Support any statement you make
with quotations.
4. Prepare a short personal response to the following issues – what is your
opinion or reaction to the topic/issu e?
1) Who you are as a researcher, what interests you, where you see your
research moving in the future, what your accomplishments are and how
they propel you towards new goals?
2) How your work complements the research already happening at the
institution where you are applying, or would benefit from collaborations
with members of the institution.
3) Research thesis: Does the thes is show analysis and depth of thought, or is
it mainly descriptive? Does the thesis present an argument about the
material, and is it worded as an argument? Is the thesis contestable?

3. INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEWSPAPER ANALYSIS30
1. Find a newspaper article that interests you. Give the title and date.
2. Summarise the main points of the article in your own words. (3-5
bullet points or sentences)
3. State the purpose of the article. Note that many articles may have
multiple purposes (e.g. to entertain and persuade). Identify what you
consider to be the main purpose, explaining your reasons in part 4 if
necessary.
