THE SHAMROCK ORGANISATION
The Irish management thinker, Charles Handy, believes that the traditional
company is dying. In his book, The Age of Unreason, he says that today more and
more people are working in a “shamrock organization”.
The first leaf of the shamrock represents the organization’s core workers.
These employees are usually qualified professionals and managers. They work very
long hours and, in return, receive high salaries and generous benefits. They are in
charge of the business. In a normal company, they would be chairpersons. Sometimes they're the shareholders - the people who invest money in the firm.
Work that is not essential to the organization goes to people in the second leaf
of the shamrock. These people are normally self-employed and are specialists in certain kinds of work. They often sell their services to more than one organization. They
are responsible to core managers and work closely to them. They organize all the
practical things and deals with any problems.
The third leaf of the shamrock is the flexible labour force – temporary and parttime workers. The organization saves money because it only employs these people
when it needs them. Their job is to make sure that everyone is in the right place at
the right time and that they know what to do.
1. Which of these jobs should you keep in core in a shamrock oil compa-
ny?
Accountant Computer programmer Lawyer

Company doctor Chief executive officer
2. Which of these functions should you keep in core in a shamrock oil
