incorrect salutation gerund/ infinitive mistake
Dear Sir/Madam, I write this letter to apply for the job I saw advertised somewhere. I have always wanted doing this job ever since I was little boy. I always like to
watch films on TV and dream that one day I will work at an office. It sounds really
cool and I'm sure that you are a great boss! There is and another reason why I want this job it is because when I leave school I want to be a manager, and it would be
good experience for me. I would also like to know how much is the salary in order to plan my holidays for the summer. Please let me know if I get the job. I can't wait!
Yours truly, Bill
4. The Interview. It is the most important stage in your search for a job. Be-
fore the interview try to gather as much information as possible about the firm you want to apply for. The more active you take part in the interview, asking questions and speaking out professionally, the more chances you have to get the desired job. During the interview try not to be pretentious, but sure of yourself. Keep in mind three golden rules:
1. Don’t offer any information of yourself if you are not asked to.
2. Don’t mention your personal problems.
3. Don’t speak bad of your former boss.
Try to come to the interview 10 minutes earlier. You might be asked to com-
plete the application for employment.
18) Study the hints. Which of them do you consider to be the most im-
portant for a successful interview? Explain your choice.
SOME HINTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW
Interview is a special genre which can be regarded as a self-presentation.
Sometimes it looks like a cross-examination with a kind and an angry examiner. The aim of any interview is to create a stressful situation for an applicant within a short period of time to see how he will cope with it.
Interview starts with a telephone call of the employer about its appointment.
Another aim of this call is to listen how the applicant answers the telephone calls to get the first impression about his or her physical presentation (voice, timbre, manner of speaking). The applicant must be ready for the interview at any time.
Self-presentation is being listened not more than 3-5 minutes. The longer the
interview lasts the more chances you are engaged.

HOW TO BEHAVE DURING THE INTERVIEW
1. Before the interview you should get as much information as possible about
the company you are applying for.
2. It would be much better to visit the company's office 2-3 days before the in-
terview to see if there is a security there, what car models are in front of it, how people look like.
3. On the day of the interview you should come 10 minutes before the begin-
ning to calm your nerves and to bring yourself in order.
4. Observe your dress code. Try to avoid the extreme style. Be neat and re-
spectful. Mind appropriate heels, skirts, bags, quantity of jewelry for women, and suits, ties, glasses, rims, suit-cases for men. Avoid black and brown colors.
5. You must be ready to answer the questions about your previous positions,
functions, obligations and reasons of leaving.
6. You should praise the previous company, show the loyalty to its manage-
ment and point out correctly your experience.
7. While speaking about the reasons of leaving it is better not to reveal the real
reason. The safe reasons may be the termination of the previous company, moving to another place. Don't forget to make a compliment to the company you are applying for.
8. The reasons for applying for this particular company may be the following:
you want to have a chance of professional growth; you wish to contribute to the company's prosperity.
9. You should manage to listen to all persons who are conducting the inter-
view, to keep eye-contact and to be ready to interrupt them politely if necessary.
10. You must be able to prove with authority that you are the person they need.
11. If you realize that you are going to be taken ask a question about your fu-
ture salary. But mind if you don't manage to prove yourself in this position your starting salary may become your internal one.
HOW NOT TO BEHAVE DURING THE INTERVIEW
1. Never be late for an interview.
2. Never demonstrate disloyalty to your previous authorities.
3. Never discuss your competitors, the volume of sales, the annual turnover or
you won't be taken.
4. Don't demonstrate super-enthusiasm it may seem that you are trying to hide
the lack of professional skills and abilities.
5. You are not obliged to answer very personal questions but at the same time
try not to speak about your personal problems.
162
WHAT QUALITIES SHOULD BE ESTIMATED DURING THE
INTERVIEW
physical presentation; quick thinking; ability to learn fast; social maturity; social background; team spirit; ability to work under pressure; ability to listen; ability to keep eye-contact.
THE WAY THE INTERVIERS SHOULD BEHAVE
1) Listen attentively not only to the applicants but also to each other.
2) Be spontaneous in asking questions in accordance with the information pre-
sented by the applicants.
3) Interrupt the applicants politely. Always remember that the real business is no more than a role-play. Everyone
bears "masks'. You should never reveal yourself just to the end even during the business lunch. You should never demonstrate your weak points. Remember: the aim of any business to reach the advantageous agreements for your company in the most effective way.
19) While participating in the interview don't forget to use linking phrases.
Expressing opinions
I think...; I believe...; In my opinion...; To my mind...; To me....
Asking for opinion
What do you think about...? What's your opinion..? Don't you agree...?
Agreeing
I couldn't agree more...; I quite agree with you...; That's true...; I partly agree....
Disagreeing
I don't think so...; 1 don't agree...; I (don't) feel...; Perhaps you're right, but on
the other hand...; That's not quite the way I see it...; I see what you mean, but....
163

Can you tell me/explain why...? I don't really understand why...; Why is it
that...?
Giving explanations
Well...; you see...; to be honest.
20) Now you will hear an interview with one of the candidates for the job.
A little bit of carrot and plenty of stick — метод кнута и пряника. Incentive -
стимул. Challenge - вызов.
21) Comment on the candidate's skills/
Experience (the way of motivating people, what he liked in the army, the rea-
sons of leaving)
Personality (spending free time, weak points) Expectations (future salary, retirement). What questions do you think the major will ask? Do you think he will be engaged?
22) Role Play: Applying for a job.
Divide into two teams. The first team should present two or more independent
companies, announce the vacant position in press or on the Internet site, and arrange the interview with the applicants. The members of the second team write resumes and letters of application (120 – 180 words) to apply for these positions and participate in the interview. Only one applicant for each company should be chosen. GOOD LUCK!
TAPESSCRIPT:
Interviewing the major
Interviewer. So, Major, can we start by talking about the skills that you can
bring to this job?
Major. That’s no problem. Interviewer. Now, obviously, as an army major you’ve got plenty of manage-
rial experience, but how do you try to motivate the people that you manage?
Major. Hmm. Well, a little bit of carrot and plenty of stick. That’s my way. Interviewer. A little bit of carrot and plenty of stick? Major. Yes. What I mean is, you have to be tough with people you manage,
make them respect you. And sometimes ... once in a while, you can give them a little incentive.
Interviewer. I see. Would you say that you’re a natural communicator?
164
Major. A natural communicator? No. Not really. Interviewer. Can you give an example of a situation in which your communi-
cation skills were particulary important?
Major. Hmm. That’s tricky. Interviewer. Well, tell me about how you deal with a difficult soldier. Major. Oh, that’s easy. Shout at him, punish him and make sure he knows his
place.
Interviewer. Right. Yes. Well, er ... let’s talk a little about your experience.
What did you like most about your time in the army?
Major. Oh, the discipline. Interviewer. The discipline? Major. Yes, the combination of the discipline and the adventure. I love it. Interviewer. So why are you leaving? Major. Well, I suppose I’m looking for a new challenge ... and more money, of
course.
Interviewer. Challenges are obviously important to you. Tell me something
more about yourself. How do you spend your free time?
Major. I like to keep fit. Very, very fit. I like to be outside, running, hunting,
having a good time.
Interviewer. Well, there are plenty of those kind of opportunities in Kenia. Major. I know. That’s why I want the job ... one of the reasons, of course. Interviewer. And what do you think are your weak points? Major. Weak? That’s not my kind of adjective. I’m ... er ... I’m ... I know ...
I’m not very good with young children.
Interviewer. I see. So, major, let’s talk about what you want from the compa-
ny. How much do you expect to earn?
Major. No less than US $ 80,000 per year. Interviewer. Right. And finally, what about the future? What kind of job
would you like to have in five year’s time?
Major. Five year’s time? I’d like to retire! Ha ha ha! Only kidding! No, I never
think that far ahead.
Interviewer. Well, thank you, major. Now do you have any questions ...
