HERZEN UNIVERSITY
The Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia (Herzen University) is one of the oldest teacher-training institutions in the country. It is named after the outstanding writer and philosopher Alexander Herzen.
I am happy and proud to study at Herzen University. It is situated in the same center of the city, on the picturesque bank of the Moika river next to the Stroganov Palace, and in front of the legendary Kazan Cathedral.
Its history dates back to the XVIII century. In 1797 count Betskoy established the Foundling Hospital for illegitimate and poor children. That is why the symbol of the Orphanage became a pelican giving flesh to its fledgelings.
The Orphanage started training craftsmen, governesses and tutors, teachers and
educators for Russian and national schools. Later it was succeeded by the Nikolayevsky Women's Orphanage Institute. After the Revolution it was
transformed into a pedagogical institute. Since then over 120-thousand students have received pedagogical training here, working in many countries of the world.
Nowadays, its faculties and institutes have a student body of more than 15,000 Russian and foreign students. They study at the full-time and part-time departments as well as by correspondence. In addition, there are around five-thousand professors and employees who are involved in the teaching process. They are really high skilled specialists.
Our University trains teachers for primary and secondary schools in such specialities as physics, mathematics, history, geography, biology, chemistry, philosophy, law, economics, music, etc. It also trains teachers for nursery, boarding and special schools for disabled children.
The curricula consist of the subjects students specialize in, social disciplines and physical training. Professional training includes educational subjects - psychology,

history of education and pedagogics. All students are taught foreign languages. Students have to attend different lectures and seminars. In general, attendance at our higher educational establishments is compulsory. But some students may get a free- attendance licence or afterwards study according to their individual plans.
Student’s practical work is given much attention to at our University. Students prepare and give lessons at primary and secondary schools and work as tutors and educators. Under the Soviets they worked as pioneer-leaders.
There is also a students’ research society at every institute or university which stimulates their creative thinking and scientific investigation. The research society of our university has formed many well-known scientists and even new trends in science, technology.
The university course lasts five or four years. An academic year is divided into two terms each ending in an examination session. Those who pass the exams successfully get a scholarship or stipend.
