What would you do if you discovered more than 3,000 pounds in used banknotes in (A1) … unlocked night safe? That was what two British teenagers came (A2) … when they were hanging (A3) … outside a bank on (A4) … Saturday evening with nothing much to do. As a joke one of them pulled the handle of the safe and it opened. They couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw (A5) … money inside. They grabbed their unexpected find and made (A6) … . Unfortunately for them, the theft was being recorded by security cameras. The money was reported missing the following Monday and the teenagers were arrested for the crime (A7) … the week. It was not a major crime, of course, but they both ended (A8) … with criminal records. They also had to pay a fine and apologize to the bank.

I. All over the country young people are entering a world of homelessness and poverty, according to a recent report by the housing group, Shelter. Nearly 150,000 young people aged between sixteen and twenty-five will become homeless this year, says Shelter. Some of the young homeless may sleep out in the open in such places as ‘cardboard city’ in London, where people of all ages sleep in the open air in their only homes – card-
7
board boxes. Others may find accommodation in shelters run by voluntary organizations or get a place in a hostel, which gives them board for up to ten weeks.
II. But who are these people? Those seeking a roof over their heads are mostly not runaways but ‘throwaways’ – people who have been thrown out of their homes or forced to leave because of parental divorce, an unsympathetic step-parent or one of many other reasons.
III. Take the case of one sixteen-year-old schoolgirl we shall call Alice. She did not come from a poor home and had just passed her exams with good results. The Shelter team met her in an overnight hostel where she was sitting down doing her Physics homework. It turned out that her parents had thrown her out of her home for no other reason that she wanted to do Science Advanced Level exams – which her parents refused her permission to do, saying that sciences were unladylike!
IV. Shelter says that the Government’s laws do nothing to help these youngsters. Rising rents, a shortage of cheap housing and a cut in benefits for young people under the age of twenty-five are causing a national problem, according to Shelter. The recent changes in the benefit laws mean that someone aged between sixteen and twenty-five gets less than older people and they can only claim state help if they prove that they left home for a good reason.
V. Shelter believes that because of the severe cuts in benefits to young people, more and more are being forced to sleep on the streets. Shelter also points out that if you are homeless, you can’t get a job because employers will not take on someone without a permanent address; and if you can’t get a job, you are homeless because you don’t have any money to pay for accommodation. It’s an impossible situation.
А36. ‘Cardboard city’ in London is known
1)for its extraordinary architecture with houses built of cardboard;
2)as the district of the homeless who sleep in cardboard boxes;
3)as a place where people of all ages can sleep in the open air.
А37. Young homeless people are mostly
1)runaways who have left home in protest against their conservative parents;
2)those who have been made to leave their home for a host of reasons;
3)those whose parents have divorced or separated.
А38. Alice was thrown out of her home because
1)she was unladylike;
2)she was keen on Sciences;
3)she wanted to become a physician.
8
А39. For a homeless person it is next to impossible to get a job as
1)one of the first requirements is a permanent address;
2)you don’t have any money to bribe your employer;
3)you don’t have proper qualifications.

«The change in our daughter Jo was so gradual we didn’t really take it too seriously to begin with», admits Wendy, 42. «Being on a diet seems quite normal for a teenager. But her slimming got out of control. She changed from a well-built, happy athletic girl of 16 into a pale, irritable walking skeleton. And the more we tried to get her to eat, the more she rebelled».
«No one was allowed near her when she was eating. (A43) …She also insisted on cooking for the rest of us. But we eventually gave up trying to get her to accept food from us. (A44) … She always seemed to be on the go – cooking, clearing the table – often before the rest of us had even finished – and washing up. For a long time she refused to even believe she had a problem. (A45) … ».
«Eventually she was so weak I got her admitted into hospital with the doctor’s help. My husband and I had to literally drag her screaming into the car. That dreadful moment will stay in my mind for ever. Jo was gripped
9
with fear and panic and I felt so guilty. But we were desperate. We thought that in hospital she might discover that she actually did not want to break free of her condition. (A46) … The doctor told us that the best thing we could do was to leave. At this point Jo started to sob uncontrollably. «Don’t leave me, Mummy», she begged. «Please don’t leave me».
«(A47) … They got her strength up by feeding her and then arranged for her to see the hospital psychiatrist, who recommended her for specialist help. Jo’s recovery has been slow. Living with her is like living on a knife edge where the slightest word can trigger sobbing and screaming and wild accusations. At first I just felt this terrible guilt. (A48) … I don’t think Jo will ever be free of her anorexia but she is learning to keep it under control».
