I. Australia was sighted by Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish ships in the seventeenth century. No colonies followed at the time, however, as these nations were less interested in colonizing than in exploring. As in the early history of the United States, it was the English who established the permanent settlement in Australia.

II. The history and geography of these two former British colonies have some other things in common as well. Australia and the United States are about equal in size, and barren western portions of the two bear a close physical resemblance. It was the eastern coast of Australia and America that the English first settled, and both colonies soon began to expand to the west. However, this westward expansion occurred more because the colonists were searching for better land than because the population was increasing. Settlement on the western part of both countries quickened after gold was discovered in America in 1849 and in Australia two years later.

121

III. Although the parallels in the development of these two countries are striking, there are some sharp contrasts as well. The US gained its independence from England by revolution, whereas Australia was granted its independence without having to go to war. Australia, unlike the US, was originally colonised by English convicts, and its economy was rooted in wheat growing and sheep raising. By 1922, for example, Australia had 15 times more sheep than it had people, or almost half as many sheep as there are people today in the US. Yet, in spite of these and other major differences, Australia and the US have more in common with each other than either one has with most of the rest of the world.

А36. Australia didn’t become a colony straight away as

1)the nations that sighted it were interested only in exploring;

2)it was devoid of proper climatic conditions which made it impossible for the Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish to colonize it;

3)in the XVII century such a phenomenon as colonizing simply did not exist.

А37. The US and Australia have a lot of things in common, such as

1)physical resemblance, the period of gold rush, the same political and economic systems;

2)similar landscape, size, and colonizing history;

3)gold rush, climate conditions, revolutionary way to independence.

А38. The westward expansion in both countries began because

1)gold was discovered in America in 1849 and in Australia two years

later;

2)the population was increasing;

3)the settlers attempted to seek better lands.

А39. Australian economy was originated by

1)English shepherds who bred sheep;

2)English farmers who grew corn;

3)English prisoners who grew wheat and bred sheep.

For some Australians Ned Kelly represents the spirit of Australia – brave, argumentative, independent – an Australian. (A43) … As a young boy from a desperately poor family, he saved a rich farmer’s son from drowning and was presented with a green sash as a reward. His father was sent to prison and died there. (A44) … Like many others, the Kelly family stole horses and cattle from wealthy farmers, as the land they farmed was too poor to feed them. Ned was sent to prison for three years when he was sixteen for stealing a horse and, on his release, he swore he would never go back.

In 1878 a police officer, Alexander Fitzpatrick, called at the Kellys’ house. (A45) … The police say Ned’s mother, Ellen, attacked Fitzpatrick and that Ned shot him in the wrist. Ned claimed that Fitzpatrick assaulted his sister and that he and his mother were defending her. The result was that Ellen Kelly was jailed, Ned escaped into the bush and a reward of 100 pounds was offered for his capture.

From then on, Ned lived the life of a Bushranger. (A46) … The money they stole belonged to the rich and at each robbery, the Kelly gang left letters explaining why they had done what they had, and calling for justice for the poor. (A47) … Eventually they were cornered in a hotel. The gang had suits of armor, strong enough to stop police bullets, but the armor failed to protect their feet and legs. Ned was shot in the ankle and while wounded was shot another 27 times. (A48) … He was hanged in Melbourne in November 1880. One story of his execution says that his last words were, «Ah, well... such is life». He was just 25 years old.

I. Best known as the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell was also one of the outstanding figures of his generation in the education of the deaf. Bell first came to Baddeck, Canada in 1885 and returned the next year to establish a vacation home for his family, far from the formality and summer heat of Washington D.C. He regularly spent a substantial part of the year at Beinn Bhreagh, which is now known as Alexander Graham Bell’s National Historic Site of Canada. Both he and his wife, Mabel Hubbard Bell, played an active role in the social and intellectual life of the village.

II. By the time of Bell’s arrival in Baddeck, the success of the telephone had freed him from the need to earn a living and, at Beinn Bhreagh, Bell continued his busy routine of experimentation and analysis. His imagination and wide-ranging curiosity led him into scientific experiments in such areas as sound transmission, medicine, aeronautics, marine engineering and space-frame construction. Bell can be considered an inventor, an innovator, an inspirer of others and a humanitarian. Aeronautical work was a large part of his life at Beinn Bhreagh, from early kite-flying experiments to the success of the Silver Dart in February 1909. This achievement was a product of Bell’s collaboration with four young men in the Aerial Experiment Association, founded in 1907. In later years, Bell and Baldwin turned to experiments with hydrofoil craft that culminated in the development of the HD-4, which set a world speed record in 1919.

III. Bell’s activities at Beinn Bhreagh had a significant impact on the economic and social life of Baddeck. The estate provided work for men and women both in traditional service occupations and in jobs connected with Bell’s experiments, such as production of thousands of tetrahedral cells for his massive kites. Mabel Bell played a vital role in her husband’s career, providing him with both financial and moral support to pursue his diverse interests. It was Mabel Bell who inspired, founded and funded the Aerial Experiment Association which achieved heavier-than-air flight. Mabel Bell was primarily responsible for the management of Beinn Bhreagh and was deeply involved in village life, helping to establish the local public library, and the Home and School Association as well as a reading club for young women. Still in private ownership, Bell’s summer estate retains many elements such as roads, wharfs and buildings from his time. His descendants maintain Beinn Bhreagh Hall and many of the historic outbuildings although some are considerably changed. The graves of Alexander Graham Bell and his wife Mabel are located on the Beinn Bhreagh estate.
