Treasure Island is one of the best known and most loved children’s adventure stories. It was first published in 1883 but remains popular to this day. People used to think that the story was solely the work of Stevenson’s imagination, but recent research has uncovered the true origin of this thrilling tale of hidden treasure and bloodthirsty pirates.
Treasure Island’s author, Robert Louis Stevenson, was a Scotsman born in Edinburgh in 1850. Although he lived abroad for many years, in 1881 he returned to the land of his birth for a holiday. (A43) … The location of their holiday was Braemar in the rugged Scottish Highlands. (A44) … Each morning Stevenson would get up early and take them out for long walks over the hills. They had enjoyed this for several days when the weather suddenly took a turn for the worse.
Trapped indoors by the heavy rain, Robert’s twelve-year-old stepson, Lloyd, became increasingly bored and restless. Desperate to keep the boy amused, Robert got out some drawing paper and asked the boy to do some painting. (A45) … Robert noticed that his stepson had drawn a large cross
91
in the middle of the island. «What’s that?» he asked. «That’s the buried treasure», said the boy.
(A46) … He had recently been asked to contribute stories to a children’s magazine published by his friend W. E. Henley and he began to see the germ of an adventure story in the boy’s picture. While the rain was beating down on the roof of his rented holiday cottage the author sat down by the fire to write a story. He would make the hero a twelve-year-old boy, just like his own stepson. (A47) …
For the last four years Henley had published Robert’s stories in his magazine, and the two had become good friends. But there was something unusual about Henley; as a young man one of his legs had been amputated and he walked around with the aid of an artificial wooden leg. Robert had always wanted to include such a character in a story. (A48) … So, thanks to a rainy September in Scotland, a publisher with a wooden leg, and the inventiveness of a twelve-year-old American boy, we have one of the greatest adventure stories in the English language.

I. Lorraine liked art best because he sat next to her in art. She liked the sound of his name. She could say it perfectly in her head, Thomas Baldwin. But she couldn’t say it out loud at all. The two words of his name got all tangled as they came out, the way so many words do when you are only nine years old. At least, she was nine years old. He was ten. His birthday was in June. She could not have said what he looked like because she never looked at him. But he was yellow and blue somehow and most boys were red and black. He was also smooth and most boys were rough. Somehow, Lorraine felt all right with him in the same way she felt all right with her dad.
II. Art was nice anyway. You splashed about with water and you made pretty patterns. Miss Crosby, her teacher, often got cross in the Friday art lessons but Lorraine understood that. It was because Miss Crosby was young and new and there were thirty of them in the class and there was only one of her and the boys sometimes behaved badly. Lorraine liked Miss Crosby. But not as much as she liked Thomas Baldwin.
97
III. Today’s Friday art lesson is more than usually lovely. Today they are making patterns in twos. Some of the boys were silly about that, as usual. But not Thomas Baldwin.
«What colours do you want to do?» he asks her, in that serious way he has. «Yellow and blue», she says.
She and Thomas Baldwin work steadily and quietly together while most of the others throw paint and water at each other or talk and scream. When Miss gets to them she has that high voice she sometimes has at the end of the week. «Finished, Miss», says Lorraine and waits anxiously for the expected praise, which, when withheld, leads to tears.
«‘That’s very good, Lorraine Pitcher and Thomas Baldwin», says Miss Crosby. «Now empty your water and start another one». Miss Crosby moves distractedly across the classroom to break up a water fight.
IV. «Come on», Lorraine says to Thomas. She gets up and crosses the classroom, carrying the dirty water in a jam jar. When she reaches the sink she knows, she just knows that he has followed her. She looks round breathlessly. And he has. He has. Lorraine throws the dirty water into the sink, sighing the way her mother does when she does the housework. She fills the jam jar with clean water. «Come on», she says again to Thomas Baldwin and again Thomas Baldwin follows her.
V. In later life Lorraine sometimes wondered if she would have been Mrs Baldwin if she had got back to her seat without incident. But life had another path for her. She tripped over Peter Robinson, who for some reason was lying on the floor, went down with a bang and spilled the water all down the front of her dress. She burst into tears in an untidy wet heap on the floor. «Silly girl», said Thomas Baldwin, as he stepped carefully over her. As the bell went, he walked into the playground and out of her life.
А36. Lorraine was fond of art lessons most of all, because
1)children could splash with water and make pretty patterns;
2)she liked Miss Crosby;
3)Thomas Baldwin and she occupied the same desk.
А37. The girl couldn’t describe Thomas’ appearance as
1)she was too embarrassed to look at him;
2)she had poor eyesight and his image was like a blur;
3)his looks didn’t matter.
А38. Miss Crosby often got cross in the Friday art lessons, because
1)she was too young and inexperienced to control the whole class;
2)the children were too naughty and wouldn’t obey;
3)she was usually worn out and nervous at the end of the week.
98
А39. Thomas Baldwin went out of Lorraine’s life because
1)he was selfish and arrogant;
2)Peter Robinson vanquished the girl’s heart once and forever;
3)the boy preferred to spend his time in the playground.

Why do we like some people more than we do others? Why do we fall in love? (A43) … Others believe in fate. However, psychologist Angela Hubbard, who advises one of the biggest computer dating services in the country, rejects these explanations. «The reasons people are attracted to each have been known for a very long time. (A44) …», she says.
The first reason is Frequency of Contact; the more often we see a person, the more likely is that we will become friends or lovers. Angela describes a well-known experiment that took place in the 1980s. «(A45) … They didn’t realize it but they were shown some photographs more frequently than others, and these were of the faces they later said they liked».
(A46) … The more interests we share with another person the more likely it is that we will not only become friendly with that person but that our friendship will not break up.
99
The third reason is called Complementary Qualities, which basically means that we are more likely to like or love people whose personalities balance our own in positive ways. (A47) … .
The fourth reason is Recognition and Reward. (A48) … However, most of us also tend to be suspicious of people who flatter us - who say nice things about us but who we think are not really sincere.
