Teenage problems
Today it is fashionable to speak about teenage problems. A few years ago alcohol, fights, killings and other kinds of violence were more problems for adults than for young people.
But now violence, AIDS, drugs and alcohol are more and more associated with youngsters.

Alcohol (hitting the bottle)
Alcoholism, which is also known as “alcohol dependence syndrome”, is a disease that is characterized by the following elements:
Craving: A strong need, or compulsion, to drink.
Loss of control: The frequent inability to stop drinking once a person has begun.
Physical dependence: The occurrence of withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking. These symptoms are usually relieved by drinking alcohol or by taking another sedative drug.
Tolerance: The need for increasing amounts of alcohol in order to get “high.”

Read the text “I drank as teenager to hide my anxiety” by Helsingin Sanomat “to the editor” 21 January 2008, translate it into Russian and discuss the reasons of drinking.
I got drunk first time when I was 14. After that I was drunk almost every Friday, sometimes also on Saturday for the next 20 years. Once we drank 9 days in a row (“zapoi”) to celebrate reaching adulthood (18 yrs) in my friend’s empty house during summer holidays. Oh boy, did we have fun!
In public media there has lately been a lot of discussion about drinking of the under-aged. During my own, partly painful growing process I have started to understand the reasons to my drinking, which continued until the conception of my first child. My own childhood was spent in a broken family and in many situations I had to manage on my own. My social life was mainly a survival struggle under the laws of nature, and on the surface I was brave and coping well. But inside when becoming a teenager I was completely in pieces and empty. In my teens alcohol brought relief to this situation. I became brave and jolly, open and loving everyone. So what! Later I understood that the important years I should have used to grow adult were thrown into building a dishonest personality instead that I could have received from someone support in finding my own strengths. I drank in order that other people would like me and that I would dare to approach other people openly.
My parents were reasonably well-to-do middle class people, and at that time they were not YET alcoholics. It only became obvious after I had left home. Therefore I would search reasons to young people’s drinking especially from their parents, who could not caringly support their child in the sometimes difficult process of growing up. Alcohol is used to hide all types of anxieties and to find ways out. A shy person becomes brave, one who hides his/her hate becomes aggressive, one who is disguises his/her sorrow will cry, one who is introverted becomes jolly, and so on.
In the nearby suburban forest of my youth all kinds of destinies could be seen. It could be compared with any TV soap opera. All of us did not survive, so I should probably be thankful that my adventures under the influence of alcohol did not kill me. What is sad, though, that this terrain acts as the training ground for children and teenagers where they grow into adulthood. I recommend that all parents should sometimes visit these “playing grounds”, if they dare.
I can value that I was allowed to experiment things by myself and that I was “trusted”, but I would have hoped that someone had cared for me so much that had organized something else, had been with me, had asked what do I like. I drank in order to get a false feeling that someone cared for me.

Drug abuse (drug taking/drug consumption)
1. Read and translate the text “A ROAD TO... SOMEWHERE? I Don’t Think So!”
The word Drug is defined as “any substance other than food that can affect the way your mind and body work.” There are hundreds of different drugs, each with its particular effect on the body’s nervous system. Narcotics are a series of drugs that affect the mind, causing mental changes. The United States Government will not allow any new drug to be prescribed by a doctor or sold by a pharmacist until the drug has been thoroughly tested and proven to be medically safe. These tests take as long as years before they are approved for use by the public; and even after they have been approved and sold for years, serious side effects may appear and the drug is removed and discarded for any further medical use.
Unstable drugs, referred to on the streets as Crack, PCP, Ice, LSD, Speed and many others, are made up of several chemical substances, which are made illegally in hideaways without proper equipment or skills to carefully measure exact proportions – resulting in a drug that no one knows what the after-effects will be.
FACT: Unstable drugs are responsible for killing thousands of young people experimenting with drugs each year. Those who escape death are sometimes confined to a mental institution.
A drug dealer’s interest is in your money – not your health! Always look for the signs!

things sends a message of DANGER to the observer and one stays away. There are other dangers out in the world that take more lives than the attacks totaled from those living creatures. The sad part is people who suffer from these killers place them into their own bodies. The end result is the same. So what is the difference?

Uncontrolled sexual behavior and teenage pregnancy
Подростковые беременности тоже не приносят пользы, ведь как могут стать родителями подростки (teenage mothers and fathers), которые сами еще дети, не имеющие нормального образования (adequate education) и финансовых средств для содержания ребенка (monetary means to support a baby)?
