.pdfcontent was once carried in the smoke signals of American Indians, I can safely guess that it did not include philosophical argument. Puffs of smoke are insufficiently complex to express ideas on the nature of existence, and even if they were not, a Cherokee philosopher would run short of either wood or blankets long before he reached his second axiom. You cannot use smoke to do philosophy. Its form excludes the content. (Postman)
16.The negative aspect of this amateur approach was that the business side of the Firm’s activities was always in a shambles. When
Warington Taylor [...] was employed by Morris as business manager in 1865, he was appalled to discover just how casually the Firm conducted their affairs. There seemed to be total failure to cost jobs or organize the flow of work, to charge enough or keep proper accounts, or to make the best and most economic use of available labour. (Dore)
17.A cathedral often took several hundreds of years to complete. First, the foundations had to be excavated ‒ a giant task. 8.5 ‘Nominative with the infinitive’
Опознавать оборот следует по следующему признаку: если после сказуемого в пассивном залоге, выраженного чаще всего глаголами to see, to hear, to feel, to say, to expect, to consider, to believe, to know, to think стоит инфинитив, по последний образует вместе с подлежащим предложения оборот «именительный с инфинитивом».
72
Например:
This man is said to work hard. –
This invention is considered to be of great importance for…
The experiment is said to have been completed successfully. –

One of the reasons for this was that the Pope was the only recognized international authority, and the universities were, from the start, quite cosmopolitan in their student population. 9.Phil Collins’s problem is more likely to be over-use of his voice when younger. Most pop singers suffer from three things: lack of training, over-use and abuse of the voice.
They have difficult lives. When they go on tour they do a vast number of concerts, sing in smoke-laden places and then go off to the next gig in an air-conditioned bus or on a plane, both of which have low humidity, which is damaging to the vocal chords. 9 ‘Sequence of tenses’
– He said finally that he would come; She kept saying, “I’m a failure.” – She kept saying she was a failure.

10 ‘Complex Sentences’
Перевод сложных предложений, состоящих из независимых простых, соединенных сочинительными союзами: and, but, or either…or, neither… nor, особых трудностей не представляет.
Такие придаточные вводятся союзами that, if, whether, и союзными словами who, what, which, when, where, how, why. Например:
1. The deputy said // that there are many other opportunities for
considerable |
increase |
of production. |
|

2.I know whom he is speaking about.
На русский язык они переводятся придаточными предложениями с соответствующими союзами: when, as, although, so that, since, though, but, for, while etc.
I saw her as I was getting off the bus ‒ я увидел ее, когда выходил из автобуса / выходя из автобуса; she sang as she worked‒ работая, она пела (напевала); в
сочетании с усилительно-ограничительной частицей just: just as he was finishing his speech ‒ как раз в тот момент, когда он заканчивал речь.
78
As it is соответствует эмоционально-усилительным выражениям «в действительности», «и так», вводному слову «однако»: we hoped things would get better but as it is they are getting worse ‒ мы надеялись, что положение улучшится, но в действительности оно ухудшается; you have too many friends as it is ‒ у вас и так слишком много друзей. То же значение сохраняется в выражении as it was: she was near enough to tears as it was – она и без того чуть не плакала.
As it were ‒ вводное предложение, соответствующее русскому «так сказать»: he is not equal to the task, as it were ‒ он, так сказать, не совсем соответствует назначению.
Предложения этого типа вводятся союзами whether, if, that и союзными словами who, what, which, when, where, how, why. Например:
Whether there be peace or otherwise // depends on the struggle of the peoples for disarmament and the banning of nuclear weapons.
Такое предложение вводится союзными словами that, which, who, where, when.
