5)В разговорной речи can/could может выражать значение просьбы в вопросительных предложениях и разрешение в утвердительных и отрицательных: can I have some more bread, please?

хлеб; you can go now – теперь можете идти; you cannot play football in England on Sundays – по воскресеньям в Англии в футбол не играют / в воскресенье в Англии не разрешается (нельзя) играть в футбол.

Этот глагол употребляется в сочетаниях can but и cannot but: we can but try ‒ можно все-таки попытаться; I cannot but feel that it is a risky affair ‒ я не могу не чувствовать, что это рискованное предприятие; в

сочетании cannot help + V-ing: we could not help admiring her ‒ мы не могли не восхищаться ею; в сочетании as can be: (эмоц.- усилит.)

You should do it yourself. –

I should show you my work if I had a chance.

Would

I would not do it for anything ‒ я ни за что не стану этого делать; я бы ни за что не сделал этого; I would point out that there are some errors here – я бы хотел указать на то, что здесь имеются ошибки; I would rather stay at home ‒ я

сбольшим удовольствием остался бы дома;

Would you (kindly) pass me the salt? Would you mind repeating it?

3)предположение, сомнение: that would be he!

(должно быть), он!; this explanation would seem satisfactory ‒ этого разъяснения, по-видимому, достаточно; it would be in the year 1990 ‒ это было, вероятно, в 1990 году;

45

4) часто повторяющееся или привычное действие: he would often call on us ‒ он, бывало, часто заходил к нам; It’s just like you ‒ you would forget the keys!

Вспомогательный глагол would в придаточном дополнительном предложении служит для выражения будущего времени, согласованного с прошедшим временем в главном предложении: he said it would all be ready — он сказал, что все будет готово.

1.Caesar returned to Italy and proclaimed himself the permanent

‘dictator’ of Rome. He was to pay dearly for his ambition in due course: a year later one of his best friends, Marcus Brutus, would lead a successful plot to assassinate him.

2.The time was not far off when he would regret this decision. ‒

He would come to us in the evening.

Как вспомогательный глагол, would служит для образования форм 2-го и 3-го лица сослагательного наклонения в главном предложении при придаточном условия: he would be angry if he knew ‒ он бы рассердился, если бы узнал; he would have come if you had invited him ‒ он бы пришел,

1. Everyone knows what is supposed to happen when two Englishmen who have never met before come face to face in a railway compartment ‒ they start talking about the weather. In some cases this may simply be because they happen to find the subject interesting. Most people, though, are not particularly interested in analyses of climatic conditions, so there must be other reasons for conversations of this kind. One explanation is that it can often be quite embarrassing to be alone in the company of someone you are not acquainted with and not speak to them. If no conversation takes place the atmosphere can become rather strained. (Trudgill)

2.It was the next station, thank Heaven. Denis took his chattels off the rack and piled them neatly in the comer opposite his own. A futile proceeding. But one must have something to do. When he had finished, he sank back into his seat and closed his eyes. It was extremely hot.

Oh, this journey! It was two hours cut clean out of his life; two hours in which he might have done so much, so much ‒ written the perfect poem, for example... (Huxley)

I put on my overshoes and coat, mindful of the snow, should I venture outside the buildings, and, taking up the torch that had been provided for me, went quietly out... (Hill)

5.He paused, checked by that English shyness that so often overcomes us when we would speak of moving or grave or beautiful things. (Wells)

5 ‘The Participle’

The flowing water is always

cool.

Working on the theory of…, the scientists have designed…

Wounded in the leg, he was brought to the hospital.

Having arrived at the sight, the scientists discovered many fragments of the meteorite. –
