UNIT II My Life Story

1.Reading

1.1.Read the following text and translate it into Russian

A Life Story: From a Small Town to a Big Dream

Every person has a life story. It is the story of our experiences, our choices, and the important moments that shape who we are. Today, I want to tell you the life story of my grandfather, Robert. His story is simple but beautiful, and it teaches us about hard work and love.

Part 1: Early Years and Childhood

Robert was born in a very small village in 1950. His family was not rich, but they were happy. He grew up with his parents and three older sisters. His childhood was simple. He didn't have a computer or a smartphone. He spent his days playing outside with his friends, helping his parents in the garden, and reading books.

When he was six years old, a very important thing happened: he started

primary school.

He

was a curious and smart boy, and

he real-

ly enjoyed learning

new

things. His favourite subject was

history.

He made many friends at school, and some of them are still his friends today!

Part 2: Big Changes and Education

When Robert was fifteen years old, his life changed. His father got a new job in a big city. So, the family made a big decision: they moved to the city. For Robert, it was difficult to leave his old friends and his small village. He felt a little bit lost in the big, noisy city.

But he adapted quickly. He finished secondary school with good grades. He was a very hard-working student. After school, he had to make another important choice: what to do next? He decided to continue his education. He went to university to study engineering. It was a difficult but interesting subject.

His university years were very busy. He studied a lot, but he also met many new people. He received his diploma in 1972. He was very proud of this achievement. It was the result of many years of hard work.

Part 3: Career and Family Life

After

university, Robert started his career. He got

his

first job as an

engineer

at a large factory. He worked there

for

forty

years!

He was a responsible and reliable worker. He got promoted several

times.

He retired in 2012.

11

But his life is not only about work. The most important part of his life is his family. He met his future wife, Mary, at a university library in 1970. He was reading a book when she asked him a question. They started talking and fell in love. It was the beginning of a great love story.

A few years later, Robert proposed to Mary, and she said "yes!" They got married in a small church in 1975. It was a beautiful day with all their family and friends.

In 1978, they had their first child, a son. They named him James. Two years later, they had a daughter, Elizabeth. Robert became a wonderful father. He always spent time with his children, helped them with homework, and taught them important things about life.

Part 4: Later Years and Happiness

Now, Robert is a grandfather. His children grew up, finished university, and started their own families. James became a doctor, and Elizabeth became a teacher. Robert has four grandchildren. He loves spending time with them. He tells them stories from his life and plays with them in the garden.

When I ask him about his life, he always says: "My life is simple, but I am happy. I had a good job that I enjoyed. I have a wonderful family that I love. I made some mistakes, of course. But I learned from them. The most important things in life are family, good friends, and doing what you love."

Robert's story shows us that a good life is not about being famous or very rich. It is about love, hard work, and the small, happy moments every day.

UNIT III Eating In and Eating Out

1.Reading

1.1.Read the following text and translate it into Russian Eating In and Eating Out: A World of Choice

Food is a very important part of our lives. We need food for energy, but it is also about pleasure, culture, and spending time with people we love. Today, we have two main ways to enjoy a meal: eating out at a restaurant or eating in at home. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages.

Part 1: Eating Out – A Social Experience

Eating out means going to a restaurant, café, or fast-food place to have a meal. It is a popular activity all over the world.

Why do people like eating out?

It’s convenient and easy: You don’t have to cook or wash the dishes.

You can just sit down, look at the menu, choose what you want, and someone will bring your food to you.

It’s a social event: People often go out to eat with friends, family, or colleagues. It’s a great way to celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or just to catch up with someone. The atmosphere in a restaurant is usually lively and fun.

You can try new things: Restaurants often offer food from different cuisines. You can try Italian pizza, Japanese sushi, or Mexican tacos without needing to know how to cook these dishes yourself.

It’s tasty: Professional chefs know how to prepare food very well. They use special techniques and ingredients to make the food delicious.

What are the disadvantages?

It can be expensive: eating out usually costs more than cooking at home. You pay for the food, the service, and the atmosphere.

It’s not always healthy: Restaurant food often has a lot of salt, sugar, and fat to make it taste better. It is sometimes difficult to know what ingredients are in your meal.

you might have to wait: In a popular restaurant, you sometimes need to book a table before you go. If you don't, you might have to wait in line. You also have to wait for your food to be cooked and served.

Part 2: Eating In – A Home Experience

Eating in means preparing and cooking food at home. For many people, this is a daily routine.

19

Why do people like eating in?

It’s cheaper: Buying groceries from a supermarket or a local market and cooking at home is much cheaper than eating out every day.

It’s healthier: When you cook at home, you control the ingredients. You can use fresh vegetables, less oil, less salt, and less sugar. You know exactly what is in your food.

It’s a nice hobby: For some people, cooking is a relaxing and creative hobby. You can try new recipes, experiment with different flavours, and feel proud when you make something tasty.

It’s cozy: Eating at home is comfortable and cozy. You can wear comfortable clothes, watch TV, and don’t have to worry about being too loud.

What are the disadvantages?

It takes time and effort: cooking requires planning. You need to go grocery shopping, prepare the ingredients, cook the meal, and then wash the dishes and clean the kitchen afterwards. It can be tiring, especially after a long day at work or university.

you need skills: Not everyone knows how to cook well. If you are a beginner, your food might not always be delicious.

It can be boring: Sometimes, cooking the same meals every day can become monotonous.

Part 3: How do we cook? basic verbs and food

If you decide to eat in, you need to know some basic cooking verbs. Here is a simple recipe for a vegetable omelette:

First, wash and chop some vegetables like onions, tomatoes, and peppers.

Then, break two eggs into a bowl, add a little milk, salt, and pepper, and whisk everything together.

After that, heat some oil or butter in a frying pan.

Add the chopped vegetables to the hot pan and fry them for a few minutes.

Next, pour the egg mixture over the vegetables. Cook for a few minutes until the eggs are ready. Finally, you can add some grated cheese on top.

You can eat your omelette with toast and a cup of tea or coffee.

Part 4: What Do We Drink?

Drinks are also very important. Here are some common ones: Hot drinks: tea, coffee, hot chocolate

Cold drinks: water, juice (orange juice, apple juice), soda (Coca-Cola, Sprite)
