The Past Indefinite

EXERCISE № 229. Read the poem, open the brackets and put the verbs in the past simple form. Then retell the events of the poem. EXERCISE № 232. Render the story in the Past Indefinite.

James wants to have adventures and see the world but there seems little hope at present. Every day he goes to the Public Library and brings home books about boys who go whale hunting or fly round the world in home-made airplanes or who are wrecked on a deserted island, live for a year on fruit and return

home on a raft bringing with them treasures they find on the island. However, nothing happens to James. He gets up, eats, goes to school, is good or bad, hopes for adventures, reads more books from the Public Library, comes back home, goes to bed, and gets up and begins all over again, still nothing happens. No strange-looking men speak mysteriously to him in deserted streets, no old women die and leave him a hundred pounds. Life is so dull!

EXERCISE № 243. This is the way David describes his first term at university. Read his account of being a student. Then speak about your experience of being a first-year student.

'At the moment it's a bit hard because I'm not used to living away from home. I have to do everything for myself, like cooking, washing and ironing. Mum used to do all that! Studying here is very different from school. We have to choose which lectures to go and plan our own timetable. At school they used to tell you what to do and when to do it, but here you have more freedom. I'm not used to that so I often leave my essays to the last minute. Then I have to work right through the night, which is something I've never done before.'
