ARABIC MEDIEVAL SOURCES ABOUT ARMENIAN COMMUNITY OF ANTIOCH REGION
From the conquest of Antioch by the Crusaders in 1098 until the establishment of the Ayyubid dynasty, Byzantine, Assyrian, Latin, but especially Arab historians and chroniclers speak of Armenians in and around Antioch.
Arab historians mention the Armenians in particular for their role in the siege and capture of Antioch by the Crusaders, the Armenian revolt of Arta against the Crusaders after the establishment of the Latin Duchy of Antioch, and their participation in the Cru sades to the East as mercenaries. They talk about the Armenians in the urban and rural areas of Antioch, mention the fortresses and castles belonging to the Armenians. Later, in their works, the Armenians are mentioned during the invasions of Salaheddin, and the Ayyubid period as a whole. Interesting details about the activities of local Armenians and their relations with the Arabs are also mentioned.
Below is a list of historians referring to these events:
–Ibn Asaker (born 1150), Tarikh Dimashq (History of Damascus).
–Muhammad Ibn Ali alAdim (1192 – 1262), Bughyat alTalab fi Tarikh Halab (Everything Desirable about the History of Aleppo).
–Ibn alQalanisi (1160 – 1077), Mudhayyal Tarikh Dimashq (Continuation of the History of Damascus). AlQalanisi has made extensive use of the works of his contem poraries, Hamdan Ibn AbdulRahim alAtaribi (b. 1147) and Ali Ibn Abdallah Ibn Abi Jaradeh (b. 1151), which are considered lost.
–The Story of Muhammad Ibn Ali alUzaymi (born 1161).
–Sapt Ibn alJawzi Yusuf Ibn Ghazoghli (died in 1256), Mir at alZaman fi Tarikh al Ayan (Mirror of Time in the Histories of Notables).
–Ali Izzeddin Ibn alAsir s (1160 – 1233) multivolume work “AlKamal fil Tarikh” (Complete History).
–Majd adDin Usama Ibn Munqez alKanani (1095 – 1188), Kitab alI tibar (Book of Dignity).
–Ibn alShuhna (1402 – 1485), AlDar alMuntakhab fi Tarikh Mamlakat Halab (Compilation of the History of the Kingdom of Aleppo).
Arab historians, while writing about Armenians in the course of history, also pay attention to Armenians properties, settlements, traditions and jobs, thus leaving to the coming generations valuable and independent information, such as Majd adDin Usama Ibn Munqez alKanani, Kitab alI tibar, Ibn alShuhna, AlDar alMuntakhab fi Tarikh Mamlakat Halab.
Some contemporary Syrian scholars, such as Souheyl Zakkar, Mohammed Damen and Fa ez Qosara, exclusively study the history and the accomplishments of the Armenians of Antioch region.
