DIALECTOLOGY AND THE ARMENIAN DIALECTS

OF ANTIOCH REGION

The founder of Armenian dialectology Hratchia Acharyan puts the Armenian dialects of Suwediyeh, Aramo, Ghnemiyeh, Ghniyeh and Yaqubiyeh in the “ ” (ge) branch under the general name “Syrian Dialect” (Hayots Lezvi Patmoutyoun [History of the Armenian Language], volume 2, Yerevan, 1951, p. 348) and others under the general name “Antakya (Antioch) dialect” as a subdialect of the Cilicia dialect (ibi dem, p. 346). Ararat Gharibyan singles out the “ ” (ha) branch of Armenian dialects of Kessab, Aramo and Kebusiyeh (Hay Barbarneri Dasakargman Hartzi Shourj [About the Question of Classification of Armenian Dialects], Bulletin of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR, 1952, volume 8, [ ], also Hay Barbaragitoutyoun [Armenian Dialectology], Yerevan, 1953, pp. 443 – 457). Based on the multicharacteristic statistical classification of Armenian dialects, Gevorg Chahuk yan places all these dialects in the extreme southwestern group of Cilician dialects, in two subgroups: the first is Beylan dialect, while the Kessab, Kebusiyeh, YoghunOlouk, Haji Habibli and Aramo dialects as whole he puts in the SuwediyehKessab subgroup (Hay Barbaragitoutyan Neratsoutyoun [Introduction to Armenian Dialectology], Yere van, 1972, p. 132).

There are brief and extensive descriptions of these dialects as well as dictionaries that exhaustively present their phonetics, morphology, in parallel with the old Arme nian (grabar), borrowed and provincial words, and give examples from oral traditions of this dialect.

It is also noteworthy that the dialects of Suwediyeh and Kessab are still alive. The Suwediyeh dialect is widely used in Anjar, a village in the Beka a Valley of Lebanon near the frontier with Syria, where the Armenians of Suwediyeh had settled after deportation from Alexandretta Sanjak in 1939. Kessab dialect is widely used in Kessab town and surrounding villages. Suwediyeh and Kessab have large diasporas, where efforts are also being made to keep their dialects alive in a compatriotic environment.
