AIR COMPANIES

There exist a larger number of airlines in the world. Some of them are big and well known in many countries. Others are small and offer air service in their country only. All the air companies being of three kids, they are classified as follows: scheduled, non –scheduled and 3-d level airlines.

An airline being called “scheduled” is one which operates only scheduled air transport services. A non-scheduled or charter airline offers service to public on a non-scheduled basis only, and often by hire. A 3-d level company is sometimes called a commuter airline. The first two kinds of airlines operate international and domestic air services. The third one is mainly domestic airlines; their fleet consisting of small aircraft. These airlines are intended to deliver passengers and cargo to large airports from where long international flights depart.

II.Переведите письменно следующий текст.

APPROACH TO CARGO SYSTEMS

The volume of air cargo increasing rapidly, its economic importance to the world airlines is growing every day. It is expected that cargo volume will be doubled soon. Much is said about figures of tonnage or ton-miles, but the growth of the ancillary services being involved in moving goods to the airport and from the airport is rarely mentioned. The airlines carry tonnage simply and

7

reasonably economically, packages on the ground requiring a highly complex, duplicated operation.

These tonnage growth rates will certainly be realized but particularly on the high industrialized markets of the world they will cause a problem. Some fairly objective production planning therefore must be applied to the total system, i.e. the flow of the goods from the consignor of the system.

The challenge being required now is to take a total integral approach, throwing aside some of the constraints of a selection of the system.

The production of aircraft capacity is not going to be a problem of the future-the problems that are at the moment will have a most significant effect on the total cargo product unless some radical new thinking and action is taken.

BRITISH AIRWAYS

There are more than 170 airlines in Europe, British Airways being the biggest of them. It was formed in September 1972 as a result of merging British Oversees Airways Corporation (BOAC) and British European Airways (BEA)

Having formally begun integrated operations in1974, later it was transformed into a single operating structure for increasing efficiency and profitability. The company having become unified, the main airline operation has been organized into a number of departments-commercial operation, flight operations, engineering, planning catering and personnel, plus other central services such as finance and public relations.

Commercial airline operation being conducted now are organized in six groups of routes: three cover United Kingdom and Ireland; two more cover continental Europe, one North and East, the other West and South. British Airways route network is the largest in the world. Scheduled passenger, cargo and mail services are operated in Europe, Middle East, etc. Domestic services include 1,000 flights a week. Innovations include Europe’s first “shuttle” air service (high frequency, no-reservation, guaranteed seat-flights) inaugurated between London and Glasgow in 1975.

4.Long term forecasts for air cargo growth remain hazardous, future development depending on the economics, politics and energy.

II. Переведите письменно следующий текст.

GROUND HANDLING

It is essential to shorten the ground handling time by simplifying

documentation and clearance procedures. Transmittable air waybills which will

10

be introduced will help to speed up processing. The data being transmitted to the port of destination or to a transit point by telecommunications, the necessary preparations there can be already effected when the goods are still in the air.

Through such methods it is possible to improve the ratio between flight time and ground handling for achieving a shorter transportation time “door to door”.

The technical development of the product forms one side of the marketing strategy but one cannot neglect the commercial side. It is considered that services introduced from one point to another will create demand for these services and goods will automatically be shipped by air. Sometimes this has proved right. However, while the growing capacity caused by introduction of larger aircraft. It is necessary to ask whether the demand will continue to increase automatically. It is a hard work. Shippers must be convinced of the specific advantage of air cargo and especially its economy, a world-wide program being necessary for this reason.
