Sincerely, Yours truly,

Sample Cover Letter

349 Adams Street Newton, MA 02160 January 19, 2018 Dr. Melvin W. Simms

Northeastern University P.O. Box 746 Boston, MA 02117

Dear Dr. Simms:

I am presently a Cooperative Education student in the Northeastern University College of Computer Science. I have had experiences in programming in Pascal, FORTRAN, "C" language and am familiar with the DEC-VAX System. As a native of Japan, I know that my language skills would prove useful to your company. I would be most interested in obtaining a cooperative education assignment with Northeastern University for the summer and fall 2018.

I am currently completing a course in computer electronics and am working on a project revising a system for radio communications. Additionally, I am working at a local Radio Shack franchise selling electronic equipment. As you can see, my course work and experience would be appropriate in your environment.

My resume is enclosed for your review and consideration. I will telephone you during the week of June 3rd to discuss the possibility of setting up an interview. I will be available for full-time cooperative education employment from June 25, 2018 through December 31, 2018.

I look forward to speaking with you soon. Sincerely yours,

[Signature] Moshi Shieko

Southport

N. California

Dear Sir or Madam,

I wish to apply for the post of Teacher as advertised in the Southport News on June 23.

I am 22 years old and I have just graduated from St. Louis’s College where I studied languages. I gained five passes in Humanities. Among the basic subjects which I did at college were World Literature, Philosophy, Methods of Teaching, Psychology and Computing.

I love working with children. I find this work very rewarding and I am sure that my enthusiasm will compensate for the possible lack of experience. I worked in Germany as an AuPair girl with handicapped children. It was a very challenging job and I had to use my initiative very often.

The principal of the College, Mr. 0 ‘Neil, has agreed to act as a referee on my behalf.

Enclosed you will find my resume. I am available for interview at any time.

Thank you very much for your consideration of my application. I am looking forward to your reply.

A letter of application

Your Ref: K.H305/9 Mrs J. Hastings Personnel Officer

International Computing Services PLC City Road

London EC3 4HJ

Dear Mrs Hastings,

I would like to apply for the position advertised in The Guardian on 16 June for a Personal Assistant to the Sales Director.

As you will see from my c.v. much of the work I do in my present position is that of a PA. I deal not only with the routine work of a secretary, but also represent the Assistant Director at small meetings and functions, and am delegated to take a number of policy decisions in his absence.

Your advertisement asked for knowledge of languages. I have kept up my French, and learnt Italian for the past two years at evening classes, and have regularly visited Belgium and Italy with the Assistant Director, acting as an interpreter and translator for him.

I am also familiar with the latest developments in information Technology, having just completed a one-month course at The City College, in addition 10 previous day release courses I attended when I was with Johnson Bros.

I am particularly interested in the situation you are offering, as I would like to become more involved with an IT organization. I am quite familiar with many of the software products that ICS manufacture for office technology.

As well my secretarial skills and experience of running a busy office, I am used to working with technicians and other specialized personnel in the field of computers. I have a genuine interest in computer development and the people involved in the profession.

Please let me know if there is any further information you require. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely, Carol Brice (Ms) Encl.: c.v.

Ex.2 Below you will find details from Fiona Scott's letter of application. Put the letter in the correct order.

As you will notice on my enclosed CV, the job you are offering suits both my personal and professional interests.

b.I would be pleased to discuss my curriculum vitae with you in more detail at an interview. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further information. I look forward to hearing from you.

JOB INTERVIEW

One day, you will apply for your first job as a business graduate. Unfortunately, many of your groupmates, as well as lots of people you don't know, will probably also apply for the same job. Your experience and qualifications will probably be quite similar to those of most of the other candidates. You will submit a copy of your curriculum vitae (GB) or resume (US). But how do you get on to the preliminary short list? What kind of things do you think impress companies hiring business graduates?

Ex.1. Here is some advice about how to do well in job interviews. Do you think it is all good advice? Would you add anything else?

Before the interview

Find out - everything you can about the firm. If you are interested in them, they will be more interested in you.

Think - about the job. What qualities does it require? And what makes you the right person to get it?

Be prepared - to talk about yourself: your qualifications, your qualities, your interests. You will probably be nervous during the interview, so think about what you will say beforehand.

The interview itself

Be early - if you are late, the interviewer will think you are not very interested. People who arrive late for interviews arrive late for work too. So allow for heavy traffic, and getting lost.

Wear - reasonable clothes. Be comfortable, but smart. Be polite - as you would when you meet any stranger.

Listen - What is the interviewer asking you? What does he/ she want to know? If you don't understand the question, say so!

Talk - clearly, at your usual speed. Don't mumble.

Answer - Don't always use just 'yes' or 'no'. Try to get a conversation going. Look - the interviewer in the eye. Don't look down at your shoes or out of the

window.

Be honest - if you don't know the answer to a question, don't be afraid to say so. If you lie, the interviewer will probably catch you out.

Sell yourself - the interview is a chance to advertise yourself, so get your good points across.

Ask - questions yourself. About the job, about pay and conditions, about when they will decide.

At the end of the interview, say thank you and leave, don't hang about.

Afterwards...

Try to decide how well you did. Think about what you were asked and how you responded - it is one way of learning for yourself about coping with interviews.

When you are first interviewed for a job, make sure that in the first minute you make the right start: you have dressed correctly, arrived on time, shaken hands confidently, and made good eye contact.

In the first minute, people will judge you and it is important that there is no reason to have a negative feeling. 'I never give a job to someone who has made no effort to look clean and tidy; says Jacqueline King, a recruitment manager in the private banking sector.

It is also very important that you prepare as much as possible before the interview by doing research on the company. 'I always ask a couple of general questions about my firm and the competition during an interview just to find out if the candidate is really interested in us; remarks Robert Pitt, a partner with one of the big four accountancy firms.

Of course you are not the only person going for the position, so you should also try to do or say something that is a little different and which will help people remember you later. Make sure the conversation is not one-way. If you can smile from time to time, that is a good thing too!

The people who get the jobs are enthusiastic, honest, well presented, and lucky. So if you don't get the first job you apply for, keep on trying.

Ex. 2 Study different questions that your potential employers can ask you during the job interview. Try to answer them.

How do you handle criticism?

What do you think of the last company you worked for? Do you have any questions for me?

Why do you think you will be successful at this job? How do you see yourself 5 years from now?

What do you look for in a manager or boss?

Will you put the interests of the organization ahead of your own? What motivates you to do your best while working?

What is more important, the money or the work?

How will you compensate for your lack of experience? What irritates you about co-workers?

What would your rather do, follow or lead? Are you a team player?

How long would you work for us?

What do coworkers say about you?

Why have you been unemployed for so long?

Why should we hire you?

What are your strengths?

Why did you leave your last job?

What are your weaknesses?

Tell me about yourself.

Tell me about your dream job.

Describe your management style.

What is your philosophy towards work?

Do you consider yourself successful?

Role-play. Job interview.

WORK AND MOTIVATION

Reading Text 1

Motivation

People join and work in organizations to satisfy their needs. They are attracted to organizations that have the means of satisfying their needs. These means are called incentives of rewards; organizations use them to induce people to contribute their efforts toward achieving organizational goals. The continued existence of an organization depends on its ability to attract and motivate people to achieve these personal and organizational goals.

Motivation is defined as goal-directed behaviour. It concerns the level of effort one exerts in pursuing a goal. Managers are concerned with this concept because it is closely related to employee satisfaction and job performance.

If managers are asked to list the problems they face, the problem of motivating employees is likely to be near the top. Employee motivation is a major concern of managers as well as scholars because motivation is closely related to the success of an individual, an organization, and society. Through motivational efforts, people achieve their personal, or organizational, and societal goals. In an age of high labor costs and limited natural resources, the effective utilization of human resources is a key to solving many organizational and economic problems.

Yet motivating employees is becoming increasingly complex and difficult. As people become better educated and economically more independent, the traditional means of motivation such as formal authority and financial incentives become less effective. In addition, the ever increasing constraints placed on organizations further erode the power of manager to motivate employees. Within these constraints, however, managers still have the responsibility of motivating their employees toward the attainment of organizational goals. To meet this responsibility, they should understand how and why people are motivated to work

in organizations and be equipped with a set of principles that can be applied to employee motivation.

Why are some employees better motivated than others? Employee motivation is difficult to understand because it involves a variety of individual and organizational factors. The individual factors include needs, goals, attitudes, and abilities; the organizational factors include pay, job security, co-workers, supervision, praise and the job itself.

A number of theories have been developed to explain employee motivation in organizations. These theories can be divided into two main categories: (1) content and (2) process. Content theories include the needs theory and the reinforcement theory. The needs theory indicates that human behaviour is energized by internal stimuli or needs; the reinforcement theory explains how behaviour can be controlled by its consequences, reward and punishment.

While content theories are primarily concerned with the internal and external causes of behaviour (needs and incentives), process theories attempt to explain the process by which people make motivational choices. The process theories are the perceptual theory, the expectancy theory, the equity theory and the discrepancy theory.

The motivational process in organizations can be described by a model that is composed of three parts: motivational inputs, motivational decisions and motivational outcomes.

Ex. 1 Make questions for these answers.

1To satisfy their needs.

2To induce people to contribute their efforts toward achieving organizational goals.

3It depends on its ability to attract and motivate people to achieve these personal and organizational goals.
