Reading
A. Skimming
Read the title and try to define the theme of the article.
Read the article and give the gist of it in 2 or 3 sentences. Say how the title is related to the whole text: (a) it conveys the author’s message; b) it focuses the reader’s attention on the most important point; c) it contrasts with the topic of the article).
Identify the type of writing the text belongs to (a piece of fiction, a feature article, a scientific report, an essay — descriptive, narrative, expository). Prove your point.
Scanning
Scan the text for right answers to the following questions.
How did they know that 13-year-old Americans had a very high opinion of their knowledge?
What’s bad about it? What connections does the author see between this news and the self-esteem curriculum?
When and by whom was the state of education in the US discussed? What decisions were arrived at?
What was the really bad news according to the author?
What is wrong with the Curriculum of Inclusion?
Why does the author qualify the preoccupation with Eurocentrism as “a real tragedy”?
What way out does the author see?
Compare the ideas expressed in “Education” with those in the previous text.
C. Close Reading
Read the text again and: a) extract the main factual information from each paragraph; b) find the words and word-combination which convey the author’s viewpoint; c) find the quotations which contribute to the objectivity of the information given in the text; d) define the message of the text; e) comment on the direct and indirect means of conveying the message.
Analyze the structure of the text (introduction, development of the topic, conclusion).
Comment on the role of the following sentences in developing the author’s viewpoint, on the one hand, and persuading the reader, on the other. Name the stylistic device used here.

Critical Reading
Prove that the author managed not only to give the information on the problem but to move and to persuade the reader.
Comment on the stylistic devices used and say whether they are original or hackneyed.
Do you think there were good reasons for the author to use words related to medicine (psychic, pathology, psychotherapy, antidote, etc.)?
Do you agree that the pursuit of good feeling in education is a dead end?
Does the conclusion of the essay seem convincing enough?
