Preface
“Reading and Writing Aid” is devised for advance correspondence students of English. This book deals with both reading and writing goals and touches upon manifold types of written English forms – publicistic, newspaper, scholarly texts and fiction. It comprises two parts and three supplements.
Part I includes 14 authentic texts followed by detailed instructions on reading, word-study and writing.
In this part of the manual an attempt has been made to present different reading and writing techniques of English texts, the study of the complexities which are rooted in the basic properties of each type of text, the appreciation of its possibilities as an instrument of thought and expression, in a way that would interest an intelligent student. It is to be studied mainly under the direction of the teacher. The word study section is supplied with keys to some exercises (Supplement 2).
Part II provides the teacher and the student with a wide selection of written texts of different genres for applying the knowledge and skills gained at the previous stage. This part is primarily aimed at independent work.
The choice of the texts can be accounted for by the main aim of the manual: to help students master techniques of comprehending various texts of written English, and to develop the capacity of compressing the information and expanding on a given topic, orally or in writing.
It is intended for students who already have a good command of the basic grammar of English and have a reasonably wide selection of vocabulary, but who want to increase their competence in the language and to acquire methods of skimming, scanning, close reading and critical reading of different types of written texts and also précis and essay writing on different topics given in the manual. Some necessary information on different writing and reading techniques is given in Supplement 1.
The material used in this manual has been selected from various language sources published in the USA and Great Britain. The print, spelling, punctuation marks, and references are those used in the original texts.
