XII. Read the dialogues, discuss and reproduce them. Sum up the main points.
1. SCHEDULE OF SENDING RUSSIAN SPECIALISTS
Supplier: I'd like to start with the discussion of the schedule for sending Russian specialists. I mean the engineers to help you with the operation and maintenance of the ... Steel works.
Customer: All right. I have no objections.
S. The problem is we can't send our engineers in accordance with the schedule because our people already at site haven't got adequate Hats so far.
C. I'm afraid I have to agree. The construction of a settlement has been delayed.
S. Yes, we know that. Some of the flats have no conveniences and this runs counter to the terms of the contract.
C. I assure you, Mr S., we'll do our best to solve the problem as soon we can. We are going to rent flats in the town nearby.
S. We hope they will be adequate, with furniture, electric power, refrigerators, air conditioners, hot and cold running water — all as stipulated in the contract.
C. I'm quite sure it will be so.
S. Can we consider the matter settled, then?
C. I think so. I have a question here too. It's the replacement of Mr F., who's been ill for ... months. Doctors say he needs a rest.
S. Well, we agree that he should be sent back home and we are ready to provide another specialist. But you remember, don't you, that under the contract the customer covers all expenses on replacement.
C. Yes, certainly. We don't object to it. All we ask you to do is to speed up sending a new man. On our part, we will arrange for an entry visa to be issued as soon as possible.
S. That would be fine.

2. RATE OF REIMBURSEMENT
Supplier: Mr A., there's one question we'd like to take up today, it's the rate of reimbursement for our specialists who are doing the erection work at your plant.
Customer: Well, Mr S., in what connection are you bringing up this question?
S. In connection with the recent changes on the world market. You see our financial office has drawn up a report with all the relevant data.
C. Could I see it, please?
S. Here you are.
C. Thank you. We'll look at the documents and resume the discussion later.
(After a break)
C. We've gone through the materials and are now ready to resume the
discussion. What increase do you have in mind? 5. I think we need a ... per cent increase. С Oh, that's too much. We can't agree to that, I'm afraid. S. To support the figure we can also refer you to some official data from
your own sources. They say that the cost of living has gone up by ... per
cent lately. That explains the ... per cent increase. C. That is correct. Our government's been taking steps to save money.
But we have to think how we can possibly meet your request. 'S- We don't want to insist on it, we just ask you to understand our position. C. Well, looking at your request again I think that we'll have to reduce the
number of your specialists after all. S. That wouldn't be reasonable for the project. Besides, may I remind you
that reimbursements for specialists from some other countries are much
higher. C. But they can handle a wide range of matters, too. S. So can ours. That's not the point. And then, our engineers train your
workers (how) to operate the equipment. C. I believe this question needs thinking over and we'll have to meet again
to come to a decision. S. Fair enough.
XIII. Give extensive answers to these questions.
1. What countries are Russian specialists usually sent to and for what purpose? 2. What kinds of work can they undertake to carry out in the customer's country? 3. How long can their business trips last and what does the period depend on? 4. Do our specialists always go abroad with their

families? How long do they stay there alone? Why do we usually want their families to go too and what's the customer's position on the matter? 5. Why is it important to know the working language of the customer's country? 6. What does the customer provide our specialists with and what expenses does the customer reimburse us for? 7. Who insures Russian specialists against professional risks and accidents? Where are they insured? Why is the insurance required? 8. What contract terms bring about discussions? 9. What is provided free for the customer's trainees? What expenses on their upkeep does the customer usually reimburse us for? 10. Why is the customer interested in sending his trainees to Russia?
