Employment

Britain has a lower level of unemployment than any other major European Union (EU) country. The total workforce is almost 30 million. Features of the labour market include the growing proportion of women in the workforce and increases in part-time and temporary employment among both women and men.

"Teleworking" - working from home using information technology - is also becoming more widespread, for example, in journalism, consultancy and computer programming.

About 3.3 million people are self-employed in Britain. The sectors with the highest concentrations of self-employed people are agriculture and construction.

Britain now has one of the least regulated labour markets among the major industrialised nations. The aim of (he government is to create an economic climate in which business can flourish. It is done by increasing the flexibility of the labour market, by removing regulations which have restricted job creation, by encouraging belter training and by tax policy.

Careers in Finance and Accounting in the USA

There are many jobs in finance and accounting for the simple reason that all types of organisations have financial needs. Training in finance or accounting can open the door to a good career in the financial system, to say nothing of other organisations. The most typical job title is Economist.

Economists study the relationships among household, business, and government decisions regarding the use of scarce resources. They analyse trends in inflation, unemployment, and economic growth. Many economists work for private financial and non-financial businesses, where they advise manager's on trends in the economic environment. Others work for government, where Ihey help formulate policies in areas ranging from government spending and

taxation to energy and transportation. About a third of all economists hold teaching and research positions at colleges and universities.

Qualifications for the job are high. Many entry-level positions are available for holders of a bachelor's degree with a major in economics. Advancement to more responsible positions usually requires a graduate degree. University jobs and research jobs in business firms usually require a Ph.D. in economics. A strong background in statistics is important in almost all areas of economics.

Employment in this area will grow faster than the average for all occupations. There willbe an increasing demand for-economists to advise lawyers, health service administrators, accountants, urban and regional planners, and so on.

Ex. 31. a) Read the text aloud, b) Look up the words vim do not know in the dictionary, c) Do you think that the resume below "advertises" the applicant properly?

There are two basic approaches to writing a resume: chronological (or historical) and functional.

A chronological resume presents information in inverse chronological order, that is, beginning with the most recent item and moving back through time. The resume begins with your name and address, followed by your job objective. Then it lists your employment and educational experiences.

A functional resume is organised by skill or ability; it emphasises your qualifications for a specific job. There are some things that should not be included in a resume. Among these are your sex, age, race, religion, marital status, number of children,
