2.4.3 The Adverbial Modifier

37. Point out all the adverbial modifiers, define what kind they are and how they are expressed:

  1. I have come here to inform you of the results of our work.

  2. I received your letter yesterday.

  3. The teacher spoke very distinctly.

  4. The train came into the station with great speed.

  5. He ran quickly to the station.

  6. We met at the door.

  7. She was too nervous to speak.

  8. I sat on a seat watching the river.

  9. Without thinking for even a moment, Toby climbed to the top.

  10. He sat opposite me reading his paper and smoking his pipe.

  11. The orange is quite ripe.

  12. At last he felt tired and lay down to rest late in the afternoon on a little green hill.

  13. He travels to school every day by tram.

  14. It is too dark to read such small print.

  15. The children stayed indoors because of the rain.

38. Point out and analyze all the complex adverbial modifiers:

  1. She spread a rug for the children to play on.

  2. The article is too long for the students to translate it in an hour.

  3. I will tell you everything after his calling me.

  4. Everything was spoiled because of your being late.

  5. Dusk dropped down without our noticing it.

  6. Everything being ready, we started on our trip.

  7. A storm coming on, the children fled to a shelter.

  8. Weather permitting, the ship will leave the harbor at daybreak.

  9. On the little pond the leaves floated in peace, the sunlight shining over them.

  10. We started on our way, with the dog bounding in front of us.

  11. The old woman sat staring hard into the fire, her eyes wide open.

  12. He stood on deck, pipe in mouth.

2.5 Sentences With Homogeneous Parts

39. Define what part of the sentence the homogeneous parts are and how they are connected:

Model: Peter and John are our students (two subjects connected by a copulative conjunction).

  1. Neither the mother nor the father knew about it.

  2. The morning was foggy yet warm.

  3. They lit a fire in the edge of the wood and made a good meal.

  4. Give me a pen or a pencil, please.

  5. It was bleak, cold, biting weather.

  6. He advanced slowly but surely.

  7. He ran over fields and meadows.

  8. He was pleased with the letter and immediately returned an answer.

  9. Either he or his brother is expected to come.

  10. Not only the stars but also the moon is shining brightly.

  11. All through the night the snow fell slowly, incessantly.

  12. They searched every nook and corner round, together and separately.

  13. Quick and light footfalls mounted the stairs and went into the next room.

  14. Daylight sparkled on the land, on the beach and over the sea.

2.6 Independent Elements of the Sentence

40. Point out all the independent constructions and say what kind they are:

Model: The road is, I admit (parenthesis), very hilly.

Peter (direct address), come here.

Help arrived, alas! (interjection) too late.

  1. The museum, indeed, was already closed.

  2. Peter, to be sure, was not very diligent.

  3. You are a strange man, Arthur.

  4. Possibly he did not hear your remark.

  5. He is certainly a very good musician.

  6. Mary, open the door, please.

  7. He as evidently dissatisfied.

  8. Well, Brown, how do you feel?

  9. The child, alas, is dangerously ill.

  10. The pilot landed successfully, however.

  11. Apparently, the enemy plane was severely damaged.

  12. You are not going to do it, I suppose.

  13. Fortunately by the time we had to leave the rain stopped.

  14. Why, I didn’t know you were in town.

  15. O dear! You have broken the window.

  16. Hullo! Here’s old Mother Lock.

  17. Come, come, Mary, let’s hope for the best.

  18. Are you going to read this book? – No, I have no time.

  19. Have you ever been to that place? – Yes, but very long ago.
