2.3.4 Place of the Subject and the Predicate. Inversion

18. Change the inverted word order into direct:

  1. Alone in the house was Miss Sarie Villier.

  2. Only once had Lanny been angry.

  4. Hear the sound I could not.

  5. Lucky it is that we know her address.

  6. So troubled was he that he scarcely heard the guide’s reply.

  9. Not a cab did I meet in all my drive.

19. Put the negative or restrictive adverbs at the head of the sentence and change the word order:

20. Put the adverb at the head of the sentence and change the word order where necessary:

  4. The heavy truck rolled out.

  5. They went in.

  6. She went off without waiting for my answer.

21. Put the adverbial group at the head of the sentence and change the word order:

Model: A little house with a flower garden in front of it stood at the corner of the street.

At the corner of the street stood a little house with a flower garden in front of it.

  1. The singing of the birds could be heard in the growing stillness.

  2. A mountain river, deep and foaming yellow, rushed at the bottom of the valley.

  3. The whistling of a steam engine was heard in the far distance.

  4. The sound of a piano issued from one window.

  5. Three cottages with cheerful red windows stood in an open place amidst the big trees.

  6. A small inn, quite alone, stood midway in the valley.

22. Put the verb in brackets in the correct place:

  1. It was very little that Soames found to say, nor he Irene responsive to that little (did find).

  8. You seem to be getting used to it. – So I am.

  9. I think he has to work hard. – So he does.

  10. They did not refuse the invitation. – Neither will we.

24. Apply the following statements to new subjects:

25. Translate into English the following sentences:

  1. Я вже знайшов відповідь на всі запитання. – І я також.

26. Translate into Ukrainian paying attention to the word order in the subordinate clauses of concession and cause:

  1. Tired though he was after his three long days, Soames dreaded the moment when the car should stop.

  2. Simple as the case seems, there may be something deeper underlying it.

  3. Fascinating as the story was, he could not tear himself away from the book until he had read it.

  4. After the bright light outside, our eyes, weak as they were with staring at the snow, could not for a while pierce the gloom of the cave.

  5. Youth that he was, they could never question him.

27. Change the structure of the sentences using inversion in the subordinate clauses of concession and cause:

Model: Though the season was rainy, they did not put off their trip.

28.Change the structure of the sentences so as:

a) to join the clauses by means of a conjunction:

  1. Should you need my help, I am always at your disposal.

  2. Could you stay a little longer, we should finish the work today.

  3. The day would be wonderful, were it not so hot.

  4. She kept straining her ears to hear the bell, should it ring.

  5. Had he known it before, he would have acted differently.

b) to join the clauses asyndetically, if possible:

  1. If I were free now, I should consider the matter settled.

  2. The house telephone is in the corridor, in case you should want to make a call.

  3. If they saw more of each other, their relationship might be different.

  4. If he were to be entrusted with this work, he would do his best to show what he was worth.

  5. She would long have admitted that it was she who was to blame if only she had the courage.

29. Analyze the position of objects and define whether the word order is inverted or not:

  1. The only thing that stood out clearly was his mother’s face. His sister Mabel he remembered more vaguely.

  2. For the clever specialists of the clinic he felt only respect.

  3. To music she now gave all the hours she could spare.

  4. Not a dollar – not a penny – of my money will I devote to anyone who could be guilty of such a crime.

30. Explain the instances of inversion in the following sentences:

  3. Had you asked me before, I should have gladly helped you.

31. Translate the following sentences into English paying attention to the word order:
