1. Preface

The drill book in English syntax is designed for the third-year students of foreign languages schools and can be used for both class and home work.

The author makes a try to assemble in a book the material necessary for practical сlasses in English syntax.

The drill book consists of two major parts – the Simple Sentence and the Complex Sentence. The first part focuses on sentence classifications and gives a detailed account of the principal and secondary parts of the sentence. Special emphasis is laid on the agreement between the subject and the predicate and on the cases of grammatical and emphatic inversion. The second part is devoted to the analysis of the types of subordinate clauses. The author finds it necessary to offer a number of drills aimed at revising such important grammar topics as the use of tenses and moods in subordinate clauses, reported speech, and sequence of tenses.

Numerous samples of syntactical analysis of the simple and complex sentences are appended at the end of each part.
