To find a job in Britain you can follow various routes. You can send job applications to companies or organizations, and answer or place advertisements in the British press, general or specialized. Once you're in the UK, it's a good idea to keep an eye on the job centres, the public recruitment agencies, which are established by the Department of Employment and Education, or DEE, and can be found in most British cities and towns, however small. Every London area has one. They not only help you to find a job, but also provide information and advice on training opportunities. Another useful place are public libraries, with Training Access Points, or TAP.

Then, there are lots and lots of private recruitment agencies. They're usually free to job seekers. Some are specialized in temporary employment, mostly in the sector of office, clerical, secretarial jobs, and a few in the catering sector.

In England, really it's easy to find a job, at least in London. It's obviously important to be determined and willing. The simplest, most direct method, requiring only a minimum amount of cheek, consists in searching an area or a street (better if central) door-to-door, going into every shop, pub, restaurant or hotel and asking whether they require staff. They'll let you talk to the manager or, sometimes, fill in an application form. It's not unlikely in this way to find a job in half a day, and to start immediately. Maybe it won't be the best job in the world, but you can always find a better one later. Among the advantages of this system there's also the fact, important in my opinion, of being able to have an immediate feel and look of the place where you're going to work, the environment, the people and so on.

Another method are the noticeboards to be found on the windows of everywhere: shops, libraries, post offices, which display ads relating to the local area they're in, including job offers. You can also place an ad yourself. It's not free, but it's inexpensive.

Finally, classified ads in newspapers. Local newspapers in London abound, and some are free. TNT and Footloose can both be found free in and near underground stations. LOOT is not free, but very useful. The Evening Standard is the most important daily of the Greater London area. These are among the most common, but there are many others.

Answer the questions:

1.What establishments can be found in Britain by job seekers? 2. Where can a candidate get information and advice about training? 3. Is it a good idea to look for a job in door-to-door searching? 4. Where can a person place his own advertisement about job searching? 5. What newspapers in London are useful for job hunting? 6. If you wanted to find a job what way of searching would you choose? The simplest and quickest way to find a job these days is to search directly on the Internet. The number of employers using the Internet to recruit people has been increasing from year to year. Some major companies, particularly in certain sectors like IT, conduct as much as 90 per cent of their recruitment through Internet job advertisements, mainly published on online recruitment agencies, websites specialized in matching job-seekers and employers.

Many multinational companies as a rule publish their job vacancies on the web.

Not surprisingly, since online recruitment and the use of new technologies have many advantages for employers and recruiting companies. It makes the process of finding candidates and new business opportunities quicker, cheaper and more efficient.

The Internet has completely revolutionised the role of the traditional recruiter. Now it's about searching through thousands of CVs placed on websites and browsing online job agencies.

For the job seeker, the Net has simplified many job-seeking processes. Until not long ago it was difficult to find, for example, a job in a different country before leaving home. But now the Net has made that search easier.

Another benefit of online job search is the much greater information about employers and recruiters you can gather quickly and cheaply. A career seeker who is better informed and more focused is already starting with an advantage.

In the US, looking for work on-line is already common practice. But Europe is catching up, too. In Britain, over half a million people per month on average have looked for a job using the Internet. Don’t you think that it’s worth using the Internet, where practically everything one needs can be found in real time?
