Extend your Knowledge

U NIX Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie first wrote UNIX at AT&T Bell Labs in the early 1970s as a replacement for an earlier system called Multics. UNIX is noteworthy because, although developed by a small team of about four people, it is in many ways superior to operating systems developed by large teams at tremendous expense. It was the first popular multi-user, multi-tasking operating system. The most popular versions of UNIX today are SOLARIS and LINUX. The current version of the Mac OS X is based on UNIX. There are many other versions, and it is still popular for large networks and university systems.

One of the things a Windows user has to get used to is the console mode with command line where you have to type series of characters in response to command prompt, ending each command by pressing Enter. Command prompt is a series of characters produced by the machine such as “C:\TEMP”> or “unix% “ indicating that the operating system is ready for the user to type a command. Some of the common UNIX commands:

cp copy a file onto a file or into a directory ls list contents of a directory mkdir create a directory lpr print a file rm remove a file rmdir delete a directory (which must be empty).
