7. Придаточные предложения (Subordinate Clauses)

Структура сложноподчиненного предложения подчиняется законам построения простого предложения. Схематично распределение придаточных предложений в структуре сложноподчиненного предложения можно представить в таком виде:

Придаточное предложение связывается с главным при помощи подчинительных союзов и союзных слов, которые являются формальным признаком начала придаточного предложения. Наиболее распространенными союзами и союзными словами являются: that, which, who, when, after, before, since, until, unless, if и т.д.

1. Придаточное определительное предложение

Оно может занимать любое место в сложном предложении, но всегда за определяемым словом. К главному предложению присоединяется следующими союзными словами:

1) относительными местоимениями – who, whom, whose, which, that:

Laws are established by the people who then have to obey them.

Законы устанавливаются людьми, которые затем должны им подчиняться.

2) относительными наречиями – when, where, why, how:

They did not know the reason why he had left his investigation.	Они не знали причину, почему он оставил свое исследование.
He showed the place where the test show was going to be organized.	Он показал место, где пройдут испытания.

3) бессоюзно. Определительное придаточное предложение может присоединяться к главному без союзного слова. Анализируя предложения такого типа, следует найти первое сказуемое и соответствующее ему подлежащее, затем второе сказуемое и соответствующее ему подлежащее. Такой анализ можно проводить в сложных предложениях, где смысловые группы нечетко выражены. При переводе на русский язык нужно вводить опущенное союзное слово. Если в бессоюзном определительном придаточном предложении имеется предлог после сказуемого, то при переводе нужно поставить предлог перед союзным словом.

The part the astronauts can control is the cargo–carrier.	Та часть корабля, которой астронавты могут управлять, называется багажным отделением.
The molecules every substance is composed of are in a state of constant motion.	Молекулы, из которых состоит каждое вещество, находятся в состоянии постоянного движения.
The method the steel is produced by determines its kind.	Метод, посредством которого производят сталь, определяет её вид.

2. Придаточное предложение подлежащее

В научной литературе наиболее часто встречаются сложноподчиненные предложения, в которых подлежащим служит придаточное предложение, вводимое соединительными местоимениями what, that, реже whether. Эмфатический характер, который носит в этом случае английское предложение, передается на русский язык путем перестройки предложения и/или лексическими средствами.

What the announcement amounts to is an agreement on guidelines for negotiators at talks.	Декларация представляет собой не что иное, как соглашение о принципах, которыми должны руководствоваться участники переговоров.
That Roentgen’s discovery would have a great future was evident for his contemporaries.	То, что открытие Рентгена будет иметь великое будущее, было очевидно для его современников.
Whether they will continue their research or not will depend on the results of today’s experiment.	От результатов сегодняшнего эксперимента будет зависеть, продолжат ли они свое исследование или нет.

3. Придаточное предикативное (сказуемое)

Предикативное придаточное стоит после глагола–связки to be, которая переводится в этом случае сочетаниями: состоит в том, что…; это то, что….(также в прошедшем и будущем временах).

The world is not what the founders of the United Nations hoped it would be twenty–five years ago.	Мир не тот, каким представляли его себе создатели Организации Объединенных наций 25 лет тому назад.
The theory is that the accelerating force or the weight of a body is directly proportional to its mass.	Теория заключается в том, что сила ускорения или вес тела прямо пропорциональны его массе.

Если придаточное предикативное вводится союзом whether, то на русский язык оно переводится придаточным предложением, которое начинается с глагола и частицы ли.

The question is whether they will be able to design a more powerful receiver.

Вопрос (заключается) в том, смогут ли они создать более мощный приемник.

4. Дополнительное придаточное предложение

Вводится тем же союзом и союзным словом, что и придаточные подлежащие и предикативные.

A self–timing function lets the user of software detect when the next byte can be written.	Функция самосинхронизации позволяет пользователю программы определить, когда следующий байт может быть записан.
We might also consider whether the action of the planner completely or only partially determine the state of the environment.	Мы, возможно, также рассмотрим, полностью или только частично действия планирующего определяют состояние среды.

В английском языке имеется тенденция ставить предлог после сказуемого. При переводе таких предложений следует ставить предлог перед союзным словом.

The professor explained what problem they had to work at in the nearest future.

Профессор объяснил, над какой проблемой им нужно работать в ближайшем будущем.

При соединении дополнительного придаточного с главным предложением часто опускается союз that. При переводе на русский язык необходимо поставить пропущенный союз.

5. Обстоятельственные придаточные предложения

Они вводятся теми же союзами и союзными словами, что и придаточные подлежащие и предикативные и выполняют функцию различных обстоятельств (времени, места, причины, цели, условия, образа действий и др.).

Cloning belongs to the twenty first century, although many of its aspects were worked out earlier.	Клонирование принадлежит двадцать первому веку, хотя многие из его положений были разработаны ранее.
As the study of this problem is still going on, it is too early to make any conclusions.	Так как изучение этой проблемы продолжается, слишком рано делать какие–либо выводы.

Radio-Electronics

1. The science of electronics belongs to the twentieth century, although many of its mathematical aspects were worked out in the latter part of the nineteenth century.

2. The field of electronics is usually thought of as electricity that is used in radio, television and other equipment where electron tubes and transistors are needed.

3. That the radio is the fastest and most reliable way to detect artificial sattelites is well known to everybody.

4. In picture transmission the amplitude of the waves radiated at any one time is made proportional to the light intensity of the part of the picture that is being transmitted at that instant.
