8. Эмфатические конструкции

Оборот it is (was) … that (which, who) служит для смыслового выделения различных членов предложения. Так как в письменном русском

языке «смысловой центр высказывания тяготеет к концу, выделяемое слово (т.е. стоящее в середине данной конструкции) при переводе переносится в конец предложения с постановкой иногда перед ним слова «именно».

People tend to think that it is only money that counts.

Люди склонны думать, что имеют значение только деньги.

Выделяемое слово может также выноситься вперед, при этом ему предшествуют слова «именно», «это», «не кто иной, как».

It is he who called for a higher prime rate.

Это он призывал повысить базовую (базисную) учетную ставку.

It is this isolationist non-communicative tendency that the new policy challenges.

Именно эту тенденцию, направленную на изоляцию и отсутствие общения, подвергает сомнению новая политика.

Возможны и другие способы перевода данного оборота.

It is inflation, and the Fed’s need to respond to it, that had killed off expansions in the past.

Инфляция и вынужденные усилия ФРС по ее сдерживанию –- вот что останавливало рост экономики в прошлом.

Глагол do служит для выделения сказуемого и передается словами: «хорошо», «действительно», «же», «все же», «ведь» и др.

Big deficits do give rise to high interest rates and inflation.

Большие дефициты действительно обусловливают высокие процентные ставки и инфляцию.

It never did make sense to tell clients to take it or leave it: peculiarities, however odd, need to be respected.

Никогда ведь не имело смысла просто говорить покупателям:«хочешь бери, хочешь нет», необходимо относиться с уважением к их прихотям, какими бы странными они ни казались.
