У поєднанні з інфінітивом смислового дієслова виражає моральний обов’язок, пораду, рекомендацію.Should та oughttoдуже схожі за значенням. Oughttoчастіше використовують для вираження морального обов’язку, а shouldчастіше виражає пораду, рекомендацію або інструкцію. You should do it. Вам треба зробити це. You ought to be more attentive. Вам треба було б бути уважнішим. He shouldn’t be sitting here. Йому не треба (не слід) сидіти тут.

He oughtn’t to be working for this firm.- Йому не слід працювати на цю фірму. You should have told us about it.- Вам слід було б сказати нам про це. You ought to have sent the warning.- Вам слід було б (треба було) надіслати попередження. You shouldn’t have done it. - Вам не слід було робити цього. Should we go? - Нам слід йти?

У поєднанні з IndefiniteInfinitive (без частки to і без особового закінчення -s) виражає необхідність, співвідносну з теперішнім і майбутнім. Вживається в заперечних та питальних реченнях. В поєднанні з PerfectInfinitiveneed виражає дію, яка відбулась, хоча не було необхідності виконувати її. Heneedn'tgothere. - Йому не треба (можна і не)йти туди. Need he go there? - Йому треба йти туди? Heneedn'thavegonethere. - Йому не треба було ходититуди, (але він пішов) Дієслово need може вживатись як смислове. В цьому значенні воно відмінюється за загальними правилами і вживаєшся в теперішньому, минулому та майбутньому часі. I don't need advice. Does he need our help?
