GRABBERS PRACTICE

I don't know whether many people remember Tom Crabbe when he was a student in this city. Probably not many, though he was a powerfully built fellow, always in a good mood, always laughing, with voice like the roar of a lion. Crabbe graduated from college a year before I did, and went Down to a large port town in the south to start practicing medicine. A brilliant career seemed to lie before him; besides his excellent knowledge of medicine he had'that special manner that makes a patient believe in him at once. Grabble went down with his "young" diploma- and his still younger wife to settle in this town, which we shall call Brisport. For some time, I heard little from my friend. 1 once read a short article by him in a research journal, but that was all. One day, to my surprise I receiver a telegram from Mrs. Crabbe asking me to come down to Brisport and see her husband, as he was not at all well. I started by the next train, seriously worried about my friend. Mrs. Crabbe met me at the station. She told me Tom had become very nervous; he had almost no patients, the house and his doctor's office cost more that they could afford and they hoped I would be able to give them some advise.

A CLERGYMAN

A clergyman was once walking along the main street of the village not far from his church. He stopped suddenly in front of an open door. He had noticed a middle-aged woman washing the floor in her house.

"I haven't seen you in church for a long time, Mrs Robinson", he said. "I hope you'll come next Sunday". "It really is a long time since I went to church", the woman answered. "But you won't see me there next Sunday either". "I am sorry to hear that", said the clergyman. "What's the matter?"

"I am quite willing to tell you", said Mrs. Robinson. "As you know, my husband died a year ago, and I have two children. I must work hard to earn money for their food, clothes and education. My job is to clean four offices and to wash the floors. So I am down on my knees for almost three hours, six days a week. MICHAELANGELO'S DAVID

The governor of the ancient city of Florence wanted to put up a marble statue in the public square. Several sculptors tried to make a statue for the governor, but were unsuccessful. The governor was not satisfied, and they had to give up their attempts. At that time, Michaelangelo had already been recognized as the best sculptor in Florence. The governor had heard of his fame, and now he offered Michaelangelo the order to make the marble statue. Michaelangelo realized how difficult the task would be. His friends advised him against it, saying it would probably be only a loss of time and effort. But Michaelangelo had looked forward to this opportunity for a long time, and he agreed to make the statue. During the next two years, Michaelangelo devoted all his talent and all his labour to the task. When it was finished, his friends could see that he had created a wonderful work of art. Michaelangelo called his statue "David" and invited the governor to come to the public square to look at it. When the governor arrived, he found a crowd of people filling the great square. Michaelangelo and his friends expected him to express his satisfaction, but as he stood in silence before the statue, their disappointment and fear grew. "No", the governor said at last. "I am not quite satisfied, although in general the statue shows great skill. But you have made a mistake; the nose is too long".
