Exercise 16. Write an information letter to potential participants of the scientific students' conference to be held in our university. Specify the objectives of the conference, the themes of discussion, types of presentation, date and place, the name and the address of the Head of the Organizing Committee to whom they may apply for further information. Ask them to send inquiry letter to the Organizing Committee.

Exercise 17. Rewrite these sentences as you would write them in your inquiry letter to the Organizing Committee. Use “please” or “I'll be gratejul to you if” ...to begin each sentence.

1. Could you give me some information about a registration fee? 2. Could you send me an application form? 3. Could you inform me on accommodation facilities? 4. Could you give me some information about abstract publication?

Exercise 18. Write a letter to the Secretary of the Organizing Committee in which you express your delight and gratitude for receiving the invitation to come to the conference.

Exercise 19. Rewrite the sentences, use standard phrases of expressing pleasure and regret.

1. The Organizing Committee awarded you a travel grant. 2. The Organizing Committee could not support your participation in the conference financially. 3. We want to inform you that your paper is included in the program of the conference. 4. Because of your late registration you should pay the late registration fee of the amount of $85.

Exercise 20. Write a personal letter to your friend to describe the entertainment program during the conference. Invite him to attend.

Exercise 21. Imagine that you are a member of the Organizing Committee in charge of the Book of Abstracts publication. Write letters to the potential participants with the description of abstract instructions. Use the following phrases:

  1. We have decided to convene a Congress...

  2. We are setting up an Organizing Committee for...

  3. We would be glad of your co-operation in choosing the themes of the Congress.

  4. Please, inform us what themes you propose.

5.1 would like to submit the following proposals regarding...

Exercise 22. Enclose in your letter to the Committee a registration card necessary for registering at a hotel. Please complete in block letters. Use the model of Exercise 26from Lesson 2.

Exercise 23. Imagine that you are in charge of receiving guests coming to the students' conference at our University. Draw a symbol of the conference and make a special sign for meeting foreign participants at exit gate of the airport building.

Exercise 24. You are going to participate in an international students' conference. Prepare a poster communication.

Exercise 25. Prepare a short talk about the social events, which will take place at your University during the Students' Conference. Say what events you are going to attend and why.

Exercise 26. Prepare to participle in the work of social sciences' session at the conference. Be ready to speak about your higher school, its history, contemporary life, courses and extra curriculum activities.

The form of the participation in the conference is on-line / e-mail discussion. The working language is English.

The conference book will be published after the conference and will include the info on the authors, abstracts of the reports, and materials of on­line discussion. The conference books will be sent out to the participants by regular post in the period of May 15-30,2010.

The registration fee is 30 UAH (the sum includes 20 UAH for the publication and 10.00 UAH for the postal expenses within Ukraine), for international participants the registration fee is 10 USD. The registration fee should be transferred to the following address:

Exercise 28. Read the text and prove that making contact at the conference is very important.
