Ekaterinburg ( Аудиозапись)

My native city is Ekaterinburg. It lies on the Iset river. The city was founded in 1723 by Tatitshev. In 1924 it was given the name Sverdlovsk. Only in 1991 its former name was returned.

Nowadays Ekaterinburg is a large industrial, scientific and cultural centre of the Urals. Its population is over one million people.

There are lots of educational establishments in Ekaterinburg and about 70 scientific research institutes. In the centre of the city there are many banks and offices. There are also many theatres, cinemas, museums, a picture gallery, fine shops and green parks in the centre as well.

Ekaterinburg is divided into several districts. They are connected with each other by the city transport. There are such means of transport as trams, trolleybuses, buses, taxis, the underground. The city traffic is heavy during the day (as there are a lot of cars).

There are many places of interest in our city. The tourists like to visit 1905 square, the Historical square, Square of the Soviet Army, the Eternal Flame and some others. All of them are the places of our history.

6 Translate into Russian:

  1. Ekaterinburg is the city of students. There are many higher educational establishments, colleges and technical schools there.

  2. Ekaterinburg is the city of theatres. The Drama , the Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Musical Comedy Theatre are famous in Russia. The Theater of Young Spectator, the Puppet Theater, the Children Philharmonic Department are popular among the young generation. Recently – the Variety Theatre opened the door to the spectators.

  3. There are lots of places of interest in the city. 1905 Square is in the centre. Meetings and demonstrations take place there. On one side of the square there is the building of the Ekaterinburg’s administration.

  4. Square of the Soviet Army with a beautiful fountain is very popular now. The memorial to soviet soldiers-internationalists “Black Tulip” was built there.

  5. The Eternal Flame burns in the memory of those who perished during the Civil and the Great Patriotic Wars. This square is called Communar’s square.

6. On the square of the Railway Station there is the monument to a Tankman and a Worker. They remind us of the Ural’s Tank Brigade of the Great Patriotic War. Besides it is a meeting place of the inhabitants of Ekaterinburg.
