The hanging gardens of babylon
The Hanging gardens of Babylon were (1) considered to be one of the seven wonders of the (2) Ancient World. They are (3) supposed to have been built by king Nebuchadnezzar in the sixth century BC. The gardens were (4) constructed in layers-one on top of the other, much like a modern car garage, although a lot more (5) attractive to look at. Each layer was a terrace (6) filled with tropical plants, flowers and trees. The large amount of water which these plants (7) required was pumped from the river Euphrates nearby. It is said Nebuchadnezzar and his wife would sit in the shadow of the gardens and look down on the (8) majestic city of Babylon below. The gardens’ fame quickly spread, and the travelers would come from far and wide to (9) admire them. The city of Babylon itself with its huge tiled walls and gates made of brass was famous throughout the whole world for its beautiful buildings. Sadly, nothing is left today of the (10) magnificent Hanging Gardens, and the city of Babylon lies in ruins in what is now modern-day Iraq.

The acropolis
The Acropolis today is a monument to the 19th century’s vision (1) of Periclean Athens. During the last 200 years, all traces of its medieval (2) and Turkish structures have been erased, just as all the previous (3) history of the Acropolis was effaced by the Persians in 480 BC. What is left are the ruins (4) of the original vision – a group of buildings, mostly temples, which collectively embodied (5) the Athenian dedication to the pursuit (6) and enjoyment of imperial power.
Seen from the Agora, the commercial centre of Athens, the Acropolis was a reminder (7) to Athenian businessmen of the higher purposes to which the city was dedicated (8).
Dominating the Acropolis was the Parthenon, a subtle combination (9) of architecture and sculpture created by Ictinus and Phidias. This temple, built between 447 and 432 BC, enjoys (10) the reputation of being the most perfect Doric temple ever built. Even in antiquity, its architectural refinements (11) were legendary, especially correspondence (12) between the curvature of the stylobate and the entasis of the columns.
