RED

In the red forest that blanketed the earth like a sea of roses, when time sang with the voice of the earth mother, when the tides of time, in rising, swelled, full of life, when milky breasts flowed endlessly, and it was the beginning, and life reflected the blood-red day, and I was new, and I came into love… (Chantal Chawaf (1943- …)

In many ancient creation myths, the earth is described as red. Science today has revealed that one of the most widespread pigments on the surface of the globe is iron oxide, which turns red when exposed to the air. Therefore, it is quite possible that the first supercontinent was indeed red at the very beginning of our planet’s history. Paleolontologists sometimes call this land “the continent of ancient red sandstone.” From this primordial environment, the most complex forms of life appeared, culminating in warm-blooded animals. For many peoples, the color red embodied the coagulated blood of the earth. In Hebrew tradition, the first man was fashioned from red clay. God named him Adam because, in Hebrew, dom signifies “blood” and adama means “land of man.” In Latin adamus translates into “made of red earth.” In Polynesia, the first living being was a woman, fashioned by a god out of red sand from an island’s shores. In Tibet, the gods built a man with red skin. In China the first man was molded from a cavity in a human shape. Little by little, red clay carried by the rain filled up the space, and this soil was brought to life by the heat of the sun’s rays.

Love and War: Red is hot. It's a strong colour that conjures up a range of seemingly conflicting emotions from passionate love to violence and warfare. Red is Cupid and the Devil.

Nature of Red: A stimulant, red is the hottest of the warm colours. Studies show that red can have a physical effect, increasing the rate of respiration and raising blood pressure. The expression seeing red indicates anger and may stem not only from the stimulus of the colour but from the natural flush (redness) of the cheeks, a physical reaction to anger, increased blood pressure, or physical exertion.

Culture of Red: Red is power, hence the red power tie for business people and the red carpet for celebrities and VIPs (very important people). Flashing red lights denote danger or emergency. Stop signs and stop lights are red to get the drivers' attention and alert them to the dangers of the intersection. In some cultures, red denotes purity, joy, and celebration. Red is the colour of happiness and prosperity in China and may be used to attract good luck.

Red is often the colour worn by brides in the East while it is the colour of mourning in South Africa. In Russia the Bolsheviks used a red flag when they overthrew the Tsar, thus red became associated with communism. Many national flags use red. The red Ruby is the traditional Fortieth Wedding Anniversary gift.
