Unit XVI outstandig people of belarus

Belarus is a talented nation. It has given birth to many outstanding people in different spheres of life. Among those who made the greatest contribution to the development of Belarusian culture and science is Francisk Scoryna the first translator and publisher of the Bible in the Belarusian language.

He was a prominent scholar and humanist whose intellectual interests embraced theology, literature, law, medicine and printing. The most significant of these achievements was the translation and publication of the Bible, first in Prague in 1517-1519, and later in Vilnya, the capital of the Grand Principality of Lithuania. There, he founded a printing workshop which, in fact was the first printing workshop on the territory of the former USSR. F.Scoryna is an outstanding figure not only in the history7 of Belarusian culture. His activities gave a powerful impulse to the development of all Slavonic states.

Efrosiniya Polotskaya is another prominent name in the history of Belarus. She was one of the first women enlighteners of the 12th century. She translated spiritual and religious books from Greek and Latin into the Belarusian language and copied them by hand.

There are examples of talented natives of Belarus who went abroad and contributed a lot into the culture, economy and science of other countries. For example, the world famous artist Mark Shagal was born in Belarus and started here his artistic career. He created a new trend in painting and became famous during his Paris period but his roots were in Belarus. The famous Polish poet Adam Mitskevich was born in Belarus.

Belarus keeps memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic war. Among those who gave their lives for their Motherland are Konstantin Zaslonov, Nikolai Gastello, Victor Talalikhin, the defenders of the Brest fortress and many others.

Belarusian sportsmen have also contributed a lot to the glory and fame of the country thanks to their achievements in major international competitions. Among the stars of Belarusian sports whose names are known all over the world are the Olympic champion in weight-lifting Alexander Kurlovich, the Olympic and world champion in wrestling Alexander Medvedz, the fencing stars Tatiana Samusenko and Yelena Belova and many others.
