State verbs (Дієслова стану)
Дієслова стану - це дієслова, що описують стани людини, і тому вони, зазвичай, не вживаються у формах тривалих часів.
Коли необхідно виразити тривалу дію такими дієсловами, то в реченні вони набувають форми відповідних нетривалих часів, але своє значення тривалого характеру дії при перекладі зберігають (тобто в значенні Present Continuous вживаємо Present Indefinite, в значенні Past Continuous - вживаємо Past Indefinite, в значенні Present Perfect Continuous вживаємо Present Perfect, в значенні Past Perfect Continuous вживаємо Past Perfect, а в значенні Future Perfect Continuous вживаємо Future Perfect).
Групи таких дієслів стану містять:
1. |
Дієслова, що виражають ставлення до предметів (людей, подій тощо) на рівні „подобається - не подобається": like, love, dislike, hate, enjoy, prefer, adore. I like chocolate ice cream. |
2. |
Дієслова, що позначають відчуття: see, hear, smell, taste, feel, look, sound Jim must be at home. I can see his car parked outside. |
3. |
Дієслова, що позначають сприйняття: know, believe, understand, realise, remember, forget, notice, recognise, think, seem, see ( = understand), expect (= think). I expect they will be late. |
4. |
Такі дієслова як: be, contain, include, belong, fit, need, matter, cost, mean, own, want, owe, have (=possess), require, weigh, wish, keep (=continue). My uncle owns a hotel. |
Деякі з дієслів стану можуть контекстуально вживатись у формі тривалого часу в тому випадку, коли за контекстом вони позначатимуть певну дію на відміну від стану.
Порівняйте наступні приклади:

Bob has a Porsche. (=possesses) He's having a shower at the moment. (=is taking a shower) |

The chicken weighs 2 kilos. (=has a weigh of) The butcher is weighing the meat.(=is measuring how heavy it is) |

This dress fits you perfectly. (=it is the right size) We are fitting new locks. (=are putting in) |

He appears to be nervous. (=seems) He is appearing in a new play. (=is taking part) |

He is a rude person. (=character - permanent state) He is being rude. (=behaviour - temporary situation, usually with adjectives such as careful, silly, lazy)
