Проблема лишь в том, что очередная крылатая фраза российского лидера (сопоставимая разве что со знаменитым «мочить в сортире» и с предложением «сделать обрезание» французскому журналисту) на Западе осталась незамеченной. Выражение «схватить за одно место» очень трудно перевести на иностранные языки, сохраняя все нюансы, тотчас же приходящие на ум русскому.

Витоге в итальянской газете «Коррьере делла сера», корреспондент которой присутствовал на встрече с Путиным, фраза о «местах» выглядела вполне невинно: «Invece

Итальянцы, кстати, не исключение. «Известия» провели небольшое лингвистическое расследование и выяснили, что и на другие основные европейские языки фразу Путина было бы очень трудно перевести адекватно, сохранив юмор нашего президента.

В 1991 году во время визита первого президента России в Лондон она работала синхронистом для Бориса Ельцина. «Эту фразу можно переводить поразному, – сказала она «Известиям». – Совсем официально я бы перевела ее так: «The law should be observed always and not only when you have been caught» – «Закон должен соблюдаться всегда, а не только тогда, когда тебя поймали». Но все зависит от того, какая газета и кто конкретно переводит. В таблоидных изданиях это может выглядеть и дословно, то есть «The law should be observed always and not only when you have been caught by the ass».

По мнению старшего преподавателя кафедры испанского языка МГИМО Натальи МАТЮШЕНКО, по-испански последняя часть фразы Путина звучала бы так: «...y no solo en los momentos cuando te pillen» – «...а не только когда тебя застигают врасплох (ловят на месте преступления)».

Как считает переводчик Немецкого культурного центра имени Гете в Москве Татьяна МУХАМЕДИНОВА, в Германии лингвистический экзерсис российского президента могли бы перевести двумя способами. Первый, весьма резкий вариант звучал бы так: «...an den Pranger stellt» – «...поставят к позорному столбу», а второй, помягче: «...am Kragen (packt) bekommt» – «...возьмут за шкирку».

Так что насладиться очередным перлом Владимира Путина гражданам единой Европы вряд ли удалось бы. Да и не на них он был рассчитан.

Over the years I’ve developed a list of Russian words that express very succinctly a concept that is hard to express in English. Some of them I love, because they put into a Russian nutshell something you can barely fit into an English cocoanut shell. Some of them I loathe, because they are very hard to translate. Take ÓÚÒ·flÚË̇, a word that I love. This is frequently used in the world of translation and means literally, “something from oneself,” (ÓÚ Ò·fl) i.e., editorial commentary that the translator or interpreter adds to the text. ü Ì β·Î˛ Ò ÌËÏ ‡·Ó- Ú‡Ú¸ – ˉÂÚ ÒÔÎӯ̇fl ÓÚÒ·flÚË̇.

(I don’t like working with him. He adds a lot of his own commentary to the text.)

Another nice word along these lines is ‚Òfl˜Ë̇, a noun from the adjective ‚ÒflÍËÈ (any, all kinds of), which means “a collection of all kinds of things.” In colloquial American English, this is usually expressed by the word “stuff.” It’s often used in the phrase ‚Òfl͇fl ‚Òfl˜Ë̇: Ç Í·‰Ó‚Í – ‚Òfl͇fl ‚Òfl˜Ë̇. (My closet is filled with all kinds of stuff.) ÇÒfl˜Ë̇ can refer to big or small “stuff.” åÂÎÓ˜Ë, another handy little word, can be used to describe “small stuff,” i.e., a collection of small items, and in some contexts can be translated as “sundries.”

З П‡„‡БЛМВ н˚Тfl˜Л еВОУ˜ВИ fl М‡¯О‡ ‚ТВ, ˜ЪУ МЫКМУ ‰Оfl МУ‚УИ Н‚‡ ЪЛ ˚. (In the store “World of Sundries” I found

everything I need for my new apartment.) åÂÎӘ‚͇ is the diminutive of this, a collective noun that means “details,” “trivialities,” or “small tasks.” ь ЫКВ М‡ФЛТ‡О‡ ЪВНТЪ УЪ˜ВЪ‡ – УТЪ‡О‡Т¸ ЪУО¸НУ ПВОУ˜В‚Н‡. (I’ve already written the text of the report – all that’s left are the last little details.)

åÂʉÛÒÓ·ÓȘËÍ is another very useful noun. It comes from the phrase ÏÂÊ‰Û ÒÓ·ÓÈ (among ourselves/them), and refers to a conversation among close friends (usually over drinks) or any kind of event that is for insiders only. It can be translated variously, depending on the context. ì Ì‡Ò ÏÂʉÛ- ÒÓ·ÓȘËÍ – ̠ϯ‡È. (We’re having a heart-to-heart talk – please don’t bother us.)

зВ ТЪУЛЪ Ы˜‡ТЪ‚У‚‡Ъ¸ ‚ „ ‡МЪУ‚УП НУМНЫ ТВ. щЪУ ПВК‰ЫТУ·УИ˜ЛН. (There’s no point applying in the grants competition. It’s for insiders only.) Russian encapsulates the notion of “an activity for a select group of people” so nicely in the word ÏÂʉÛ- ÒÓ·ÓȘËÍ that I’ve always wanted to translate “insider trading” as ÏÂʉÛÒÓ·ÓȘËÍ Ì‡ ·Ë ÊÂ.

Another group of nouns that are voluminous in meaning but a headache to translate are abstract nouns formed by adding –ÓÒÚ¸ to the stem of an adjective. лЛ˛ПЛМЫЪМУТЪ¸ is derived from the adjective ТЛ˛ПЛМЫЪМ˚И and could be rendered literally as “right-this-minute- ness.” уВ ВБ аМЪВ МВЪ ПУКМУ У „‡МЛБУ- ‚‡Ъ¸ ТЛ˛ПЛМЫЪМУТЪ¸ ФВ В‰‡˜Л ЛМЩУ П‡- ˆЛЛ. (Through internet you can update information virtually every minute.) иУЪЫТЪУ УММЛИ ПЛ is “the other word,” “the afterlife,” literally “the world on the other side.” This has a nice abstract noun, ФУЪЫТЪУ УММУТЪ¸, literally “the concept of life in the next world,” which could be used in the phrase, иУЪЫТЪУ УММУТЪ¸ fl‚ОflВЪТfl У‰МУИ ЛБ „О‡‚М˚ı ЪВП Ъ‚У ˜ВТЪ‚‡ з‡·У- НУ‚‡. (The idea of the afterlife is one of the main themes in Nabokov’s work.)
