Noun – forming suffixes

  • ing, - ness,- tion/ sion,- ist.

  1. n + ist= n; dramatist, violonist.

  2. adj.. + ness = n; happiness, kindness.

c) v. + (a)tion/ sion = n; organization, discussion.

v. + ing = n; driving, building.

1. Find the suffix in these words and translate them:

invitation, delegation, declaration, cooperation, dictation, station, presentation, transformation.

2. Form nouns from these verbs using suffix – ing and translate them:

to swim, to teach, to write, to read, to shop, to act, to greet, to begin, to live, to hear, to listen, to sing, to dance, to ran, to drive, to start, to make, to test, to meet.

Prepositions of place, time and direction

at, on, in, to, into.

1. Complete these sentences with at, on or in.

1. Do you live …Manchester? 2. He was …the bus stop for half an hour. 3. Are the plates … the cupboard? 4. Look at the example … the board. 5. I met my girlfriend …a party. 6. Kathy’s not here – she is … work at the moment. 7. Are my books … the shelf? 8. My toothbrush isn’t … the bathroom. Where is it? 9. She usually sits … the floor. 10. Is your daughter happy … school?

2. Complete the sentences with at, on, in, to or no preposition.

1. My sister lives … Lisbon. 2. Sue flies from London … Scotland every Monday morning. 3. She is … work all day on Saturday. 4. I usually drive … work. 5. We meet … town every Saturday morning. 6. My parents usually stay … on winter evenings. 7. This train goes … Moscow. 8. Lily always walks … home with me.

3. Insert the proper prepositions on, in or into:

1. Where is the book? – It is … the table. 2. Where is the tea? – It is …the cup. 3. Put the plates … the table. 4. There is a beautiful picture … the wall. 5. I like to sit … the sofa …my room. 6. Mother is cooking dinner … the kitchen. 7. There is a girl standing … the bridge. Why is she crying? – She has dropped her doll …the water. 8. I saw many people … the platform waiting for the train.

4. Insert the proper prepositions on, in or into:

1. I opened the door and went …the classroom. 2. The teacher was writing some words … the blackboard. 3. The pupils were writing these words … their exercise-books. 4. There were some books and pens … the teacher’s table. 5. There were two maps …the wall and some flowers … the window-sills.6. I saw a pen …the floor. I picked it up and put it …the table. 7. He put his hand … his pocket, took out a letter and dropped it … the mail-box which hung… the wall of the house. Then he got … his car and drove off.

5. Insert preposition on, in, at or into.
