Inventors And Their Inventions

New inventions are appearing every day to make our lives easier, longer, warmer, and so on. But only a few inventors design a new machine or product that becomes so well known that the invention, named after its creator, becomes a household word. Here are some famous inventors and the inventions that are named after them.

Rudolf Diesel (1858-1913), a German engineer who invented the diesel engine in 1897 and so began a transport revolution in cars, lorries and trains.

Hans Wilhelm Geiger (1882-1945), a German physicist. In 1906-1909 he designed a counter for detecting radioactivity. This was the beginning of modern geigers or geiger counters.

Charles Mackintosh (1766-1843), a Manchester textile chemist who, in 1823, developed a rubber solution for covering fabric which led to the production of waterproof raincoats, or mackintoshes.

Samuel Finley Morse (1791-1872), an American portrait painter who invented the telegraphic short sound /. / , long sound / — / alphabet known as Morse code.

Do you know that until just over a hundred years ago there was no such instrument as the saxophone? It was invented by a Belgian musician Adolphe Sax (1814-1894).

About 1842 he invented a new instrument called the saxophone after his name Sax. It was only one of a whole family of new instruments, which were also called the saxophones. They were like the woodwind instruments of the orchestra, but they were actually made of highly polished brass.

In 1842, Adolphe Sax left Brussels and went to Paris hoping to interest the musicians there in his inventions. The famous composer Berlioz took a great interest in Sax and his new musical instruments and he even arranged (=adapted) one of his own compositions specially for the saxophone.

The saxophone itself was very successful and is often played today, especially in bands and dance orchestras, but the other new musical instruments which Sax invented were less popular, and are hardly ever heard today.
