a) На відміну від освіти в державних початковій та середніх школах, навчання в державних коледжах та університетах, як правило, платне. Проте сума оплати часто значно нижча, ніж у відповідних приватних установах, які не одержують підтримки з боку держави. Багато студентів навчаються в коледжі, державному або приватному, з правом використовувати федеральні позики, які мають бути відшкодовані після закінчення учбового закладу.
b) Студент, який навчається в коледжі, в першу чергу відвідує лекції з дисциплін, які є "спеціальними" для нього (тобто належать до галузі знань, в якій він чи вона вирішили спеціалізуватися), а потім уже "вибіркові" дисципліни (тобто дисципліни, які не є обов'язковими, але які учень сам вибрав). Підраховано, що американські коледжі пропонують більше ніж 1000 спеціальних дисциплін.
c) На додаток до обов'язкових курсів, наприклад, рік вивчається американська історія, два роки література тощо - в середній школі пропонуються необов'язкові предмети. Серед популярних необов'язкових предметів - мистецтво, водіння автомашин, кулінарна справа та "майстерня" (користування інструментами і ремонт машинного обладнання).
