II. Discussion
Task 1. Discuss the following questions with your partner.
1. State the difference between the following terms: dialogue, debate, discussion, and conversation.
2. Define the communication strategy. What’s the difference between a technique and a strategy?
3. What is strategic conversation? What is it used for?
4. What is a speech tactic?
5. Dwell on typical speech tactics used by speakers in their speeches in public.
Task 2. Match different kinds of conversations with their definitions.
Debate |
Consideration or examination by argument, comment, etc., esp. to explore solutions; consideration of a question in open and usually informal debate. |
Discussion |
A conversational exchange between two or more people, it supports the processes of creating, sharing, integrating, and evaluating knowledge. It is intended to be open and power-neutral communication. |
Dialogue |
A formal method of interactive and representational argument, the aim of which is to increase either party’s awareness or understanding. In this type of conversation one side often prevails over the other side by presenting a superior “context” and/or framework of the issue, which is far more subtle and strategic. |
