The adverbial modifier of purpose

An adverbial modifier of purpose follows the prepositions for, for the purpose of, for the object of, with a view to.

She came to the house for looking after everything herself. (= ...so that she could look after...) Она приехала в дом, чтобы самой за всем проследить.

With a view to improving his ability to speak French, he spends most of his holidays in France. Чтобы развить свои способности говорить по-французски (совершенствовать французский) ....

Did you come to London for the purpose of seeing your family or for some other purpose? Вы приехали в Лондон, чтобы повидать семью или с другой целью?

Exercise 134. Point out the gerund, the gerundial phrase or the gerundial construction used as adverbial modifier of purpose. Translate the sentences into Russian.

MODEL: He has black coffee for breakfast for raising his blood pressure. Он пьет на завтрак черный кофе, чтобы повысить давление/для повышения давления.

1. Не goes to Expeditions for exploring the Arctic Ocean. 2. They have exchanged letters with a view to meeting to discuss these problems. 3. The police arrived for the purpose of investigating the crime. 4. He hunted for a creative job with the object of doing what he liked. 5. He flirted with the girl for borrowing some money from her. 6. They recommended a special diet for losing weight. 7. With a view to extending our trade we invited new partners. 8. My close friend went to the Alps for skiing there. 9. They listened to the news with the object of getting some information about the car accident. 10. They are building a block of flats for the purpose of selling flats. 11. This computer program was written for polishing one’s English. 12. He bought a lot of books on English art with the object of studying it in detail. 13. He did it with a view to escaping. 14. This sort of material is usually chosen for making curtains. 15. He has bought land with a view to building a house.

Exercise 135. Paraphrase the sentences.

MODEL: They often showed the students historical films to give them an idea of the past. – They often showed the students historical films for the purpose of giving them an idea of the past.

1. They invited him in order to have the piano tuned. 2. He gave people guidance in computer programming to improve their skills. 3. One can use a coffee-maker to make coffee. 4. The fire-brigade arrived in order to put out the fire. 5. He was taken to hospital to be operated on. 6. To cut wood one can use only a sharp knife. 7. She trained for the race so as to beat Ann Lock. 8. We switched on the radio to hear the weather forecast. 9. She took the medicine regularly in order to get rid of her cough. 10. Molly closed the window not to catch cold. 11. We came early to speak to the chief. 12. Dick rang her up in order to leave a message for Mary. 13. The guys went to the pub to have a drink. 14. He went on business to Dublin to negotiate with his partners. 15. We use a toast-maker to make toasts.

Exercise 136. Work in pairs.

A. Ask your partner what for we need the following things. Let him use an adverbial modifier of purpose expressed by a gerund or a gerundial phrase preceded by the preposition for.

MODEL: – What for do we need a scanner? – As far as I know, a scanner is used for examining things in hospitals, airports, research laboratories. Don’t you know that …?
