21.The Past Perfect Continuous.

21.1. Put the verbs in brackets into the correct form of the Past Perfect Continuous.

1. Sophie (to paint) the walls all day before she finished them. 2. You (to wait) long when the boss announced that he couldn't see you? 3. Tom (to look for) a job for 6 months when he found one. 4. We (to watch) TV for half an hour when the door bell rang. 5. They (to sunbathe) for an hour when it started to rain. 6. Stan (to work) as a postman for 40 years when he retired. 7. I (to live) in France for 10 years when I met my husband.

21.2. Make up sentences from the words given in brackets to extend the situations.

1. Mary woke up suddenly. She was frightened. She (to dream). 2. Jim came home. He was tired. His hands were dirty. He (to work) in the garden. 3. Ben felt frustrated. He was staring hopelessly at the lock . He (to try to open his own door / an hour). 4. When the test was over, the students looked really tired. They (to write / two hours). 5. Betty came from the beach. Her eyes were red . She (to lie / in the sun / too much). 6. When I entered the room no one was smoking.But there was a smell of cigarettes. Someone ( to smoke) in the room.

21.3. Join the sentences. Use the Past Perfect Continuous in the main clause.

Pattern: They began watching TV. After half an hour their parents came.

They had been watching TV for half an hour when their parents

came.

1. Mother started cooking dinner. After 10 minutes Hazel came to help her. 2. She worked for this company. After 25 years she retired. 3. Peter began to play chess when he was six. He took part in his first tournament when he was ten. 4. The orchestra began playing. After 10 minutes a man ran into the hall. 5. We settled down in London. After a fortnight our two cousins joined us. 6. We sat down to dinner. After five minutes the door-bell rang. 7. We started to play football at about three. Somewhere about half past three it began to rain. 8. Margaret went to the park. After ten minutes she realized she had forgotten to close the door. 9. The family began watching an interesting film. After half an hour the TV broke down.

21.4. Use the Past Simple or the Past Perfect Continuous Tense instead of the infinitives in brackets.

1. He (to look) at her. He (to know) she (to cry). 2. She (to tell) him about her plan, which she (to think of) all morning. 3. How long they (to wait) for a taxi before it (to come)? 4. How long this man (to stand) there and (to watch) you before you (to notice) him? 5. They (to sit down) to dinner which Mother (to cook) all morning. 6. Molly (to close) the book which she (to read). 7. How long Tony (to drive) when this terrible accident (to happen)? 8. For many years people (to try) to find a way of showing pictures of things in movement when at last Edison (to realize) the idea practically. 9. 21.5 Put the verbs in brackets into the Past Simple, the Past Perfect or the Past Perfect Continuous.

1. You (to do) anything yesterday? – I (to go shopping) and I just (to arrive) home when Steve (to call) me. He (to say) he (to try) to call me for 15 minutes before I finally (to answer) the phone.

2. You (to catch) any fish on your fishing trip last day?

- Yes. I (to sit) in the boat for 2 hours when I (to catch) a huge fish.

3. You (to enjoy) the open – air concert last night?

- The music (to be) good, but the weather (to be) terrible.

The concert just (to start) when suddenly, it (to begin) to rain. The musicians burly (to play) for 10 minutes.

4. The house (to be) tidy when (to get home)?

- Yes, the children (to dust) the furniture and they (to put away) all of their toys.

5. Why are you so late for work this morning?

- I’m sorry. I (to wait) for the train for over an hour before it eventually (to arrive)

6. Why you (to be) so upset yesterday?

- Well, I (to clean) the house for hours when the children (to come in) with muddy shoes.

21.6. Translate into English.

1. Кейт села в машину и поехала домой. Всю дорогу она думала о письме, которое получила накануне. 2. С кем ты вчера разговаривал, когда я встретил тебя? – С приятелем. Он два дня назад вернулся из Бостона. Мы говорили уже десять минут, когда ты нас увидел. 3. Что ты делал вчера в это время? – Я готовился к экзамену. Я занимался уже два часа, когда мне позвонила Джейн и напомнила о том, что мы договорились пойти в театр. 4. Когда Вы вошли, я как раз рассказывала Джулии, что мы отлично провели отпуск. 5. Они пытались перевести статью уже полчаса, прежде чем пришла Кэтрин и помогла им. Она когда-то изучала немецкий и ещё не забыла его. 6. Она думала целый час, но ничего не придумала, и когда пришло время отвечать, не знала что сказать. 7. Я очень устал, так как переводил статьи с раннего утра. 8. Сэм некоторое время рисовал негритянскую девушку, когда мисс Ролстон подошла к нему. 9. Элиза была очень утомлена, так как целый день ходила. 10. Мальчик спал уже около двух часов, когда его брат приехал в деревню. 11. Тучи собирались весь день и наконец полил дождь. 12. Джорж, который громко смеялся ,вдруг замолчал.
