14. To be going to

14.1. Translate into Russian.

1. Are you going to watch this film? 2. I’m just going to make tea. 3. Look at the clouds! It’s going to rain. 4. Alan is driving too fast. He’s going to have an accident. 5. No one’s going to be the first. 6. Someone’s going to get into trouble. 7. I am going to make a cake. 8. She is going to spend her week-end with her family. 9. Look! He is going to win the race. 10. The ladder is going to fall down.

14.2. Make up questions using the words given below.

Pattern: What time / you / get up / tomorrow? – What time are you going

to get up tomorrow?

14.3. Oral work.

a) Imagine that you have won a lot of money. Tell your group mates what you are going to do with it. Let them ask you additional questions;

b) Imagine that you are going to have a party. Let your group mates ask you questions about the number of the guests, their names, the meal, etc.

14.4. Fill in the gaps with will or the correct form of be going to.

14.5. Translate into English.

15. The Past Continuous.

15.1. Make the sentences negative and interrogative.

1. It was snowing all day yesterday. 2. We were working at that time.

3. They were playing all day. 4. She was working on her report all Sunday. 5. She burnt her hand when she was cooking dinner. 6. We were having dinner when our uncle came. 7. You were burning something in the fireplace. 8. The lecture was getting rather dull.

15.2. What was Nick doing when the following things happened?

Pattern: Yesterday Nick was watching TV when his friends called him up.

  1. At 9.00 his friends called him up.

  2. At 9.45 his favorite TV program began.

  3. At 12.35 the postman came.

  4. At 13.00 his mother phoned him.

  5. At 13.45 his sister went to see her friends.

  6. At 16.30 his father came home from work.

  7. At 18.00 their neighbor brought Nick an interesting magazine.

  8. At 20.00 he met his former classmate.

15.3. Complete the sentences.

15.5. Use the Past Continuous Tense instead of the infinitives in brackets.

15.6. Use the Past Continuous or the Past Simple Tense instead of the infinitives in brackets.

15.7. Tell the class what happened while another activity was taking place.

Pattern: I fell and hurt my leg badly while I was skiing.

Use the list of words

a) to see somebody, to lose one’s wallet, to break the cup, to forget the word, to understand the sentences, to spend all the money.

b) to cross the street, to walk in the forest, to pour tea, to look up the word in the dictionary, to translate the sentence, to go shopping.

15.8. Say what you or one of your friends were doing at the time when another action occurred.

Pattern: When I came home my family were having their tea.

Use the list of words:

a) to arrive home, to see you, to ask somebody to the phone, to call on somebody, to get up, to telephone.

b) to play the violin, to knit a pullover, to play badminton, to do one’s homework, to listen to the news broadcast, to have a rest.

15.9. Translate into Russian.
