Transport and the Environment

Beginning with the 1950's the atmosphere has been polluted on a global scale with harmful substances affecting flora and fauna, and even threatening the health and life of both present and future generations. Many unique and priceless human creations are in danger.

Motor transport now does as much polluting as industry, power generating systems, construction and municipal services.

Exhaust fumes, containing carbonic oxide unburnt hydrocarbons and lead saturate the air of big cities.

Noise is a special kind of environmental pollution and most of it is made by transport, especially by city traffic, trucks trains, sea and river boats (in ports) and planes (near airports).

One cannot say that nothing is being done to improve this situation in our country. Our current scientific and technological

41

level allows us to solve all of the problems. There are plans to manufacture special equipment to make different purification plants, to create "cleaner" engines, non-toxic fuels, better design of sea and river craft.

As a result, the methods of foreseeing the effects of new technology on the environment will be improved.

Though a tremendous amount of work face us, all this makes us optimistic.

Application of Computers

Computers are getting deeper and deeper into our life. They are indispensable in space research, communication, medicine, metallurgy, light industry, information technology and many other branches of industry. Many countries have introduced computers into agriculture, education, transport and many other spheres. Computers provide security and safety of various processes, diagnose numerous cases and do a lot in monitoring different devel-

43

opments. In short they help to carry out increasingly complex tasks and their application sometimes helps to prevent disasters, tragedies and accidents.

Many people have a high degree of computer literacy, Computer games are also now very popular with children, young men and grown-ups.

Here is a short curious newspaper item about rather unexpected application of computers:

Telltale computers. The managements of some American schools have found an original application for computers. Now teachers simply feed into the memory of the machine names of the absentees and it begins to phone their parents and warn that their children have missed lessons. The teachers and parents like the new system and only pupils fall out of favour with it.

Some Facts from the History of Robots

Attempts to create a mechanical being looking like a man,

.and capable of carrying out work for him have permeated the history of civilization. The robots of today, industrial automations and mechanisms, have no similarity with man, but, being faster and more accurate when working, replace him in carrying out monotonous or hazardous work.

The word "robot", which has become an international technological term, was coined in 1920 by Czech writer Karel Capek. Robot is one of the very few Slav words (in this case Czech) borrowed in the English language. It comes from the Old Slav word "robu" which means "a servant". In modem Slav the word "robotnic" means "workman". "Robot" came into general use in English only after 1923 following the great success of a play by Czech author Karel Chapek (1890-1938). Capek's play was called "R.U.R." which stood for "Possum's Universal Robots". Since then, the term "robot" has come to mean a mechanical man, often in recognizable human form , as well as a non-human machine that does work formerly only handed by man.

In 1950 Isaac Asimov, one of the outstanding science fiction writers of our time, wrote "I am a Robot", in which he set forth the "three principles of a robot" that determined the character of robots. These three principles were (1) a robot must do no damage to man, (2) a robot must be subordinate to man, and (3) a robot must protect itself from damage. Asimov presumed that a robot must be subordinate to a man and useful for him, and this concept still holds good for today's industrial robots as well.

From the History of Railways

We usually think of railways as a means of travel. It is true. But their most important function is to carry freight. Railways play a very important part in the national economy of a country because the economic and political development of a country depends on a wide network of transportation systems.

The early railways were not like the railways we have today. The very first railways used horses for drawing trains. They were used for transporting such products as coal, ore and timber.

Later on, the horse railways were used as passenger transport in large cities. But these railways did not last long.

One of the first attempts to use the steam engine to draw passenger and freight trains was made in 1808 by Richard Trevithick, an Englishman, who demonstrated his working model in London. The locomotive was called "Catch-me-who-can", and people could really catch it.

In 1829 George Stephenson, an English inventor and engineer, built a successful steam locomotive which he called the "Rocket". This locomotive could draw a small train of loaded cars

48

on the railway and developed 13 mph (21 km/h). The invention of the steam locomotive made the railway the most important of all means of transportation. Stephenson not only constructed the world's first steam locomotive but he was also the builder of the first public railway in England. That railway used both steam and horses as tractive power.

This railway was a success and Stephenson was asked to build another railway between Liverpool and Manchester. But there was the opposition to the building of the early railroads. Most people did not believe that it was possible to make locomotives suitable for service and did all in their power to stop railway construction. However, in 1824 the steam-powered railways were already in wide use in England.

The first steam locomotive in Russia was built by the Cherepanovs, father and son. Thanks to the Cherepanovs our country may be placed among the countries which were the first to use steam as tractive power.
