From the History of London

Some 2000 years ago the Romans founded a settlement on the river Thames. They called it Londinium. During the Middle Ages it became a prosperous trading centre. Since that time London has continued to grow in size and prosperity. It is the capital of Great Britain with the population of 9 million people.

London's geographical centre is Trafalgar Square, laid out at the beginning of the 19th century to commemorate the naval victory of Britain, in which Admiral Nelson took part. The Nelson Column is standing here, its height is 185 feet.

Not far from Trafalgar Square there is a quiet little street with very ordinary houses. It is Downing Street and for the last 200 years each Prime minister of England has been living there at number 10. Walking a little further we come to Parliament Square, where Westminster Abbey is on one side and the Houses of Parliament on the other. There is a huge tower here, the Clock Tower, famous for the clock named "Big Ben".

Westminster Abbey was founded in the 11th century. All kings and queens of England have been crowned here.

There is the Poet's Corner, where many of Britain's greatest poets and writers are buried: Dickens, Kipling, Chaucer.

Scotland

Scotland is divided into three regions: the Highland and Islands, which is the most northern and the most underpopulated area with a beautiful landscape and a harsh climate; the Central lowlands, which is the most industrial region; and the Southern Uplands which is mainly a farming area, at the border with England.

The population of Scotland is about five and half million but most of it is concentrated in the Central Lowlands. All the .towns of considerable size are . situated in it. The largest of them are Glasgow and Edinburgh. Glasgow, in fact, is Scotland's biggest city and the centre of shipbuilding but it is not the capital .This is one of the reasons why there is so much rivalry between Glasgow and Edinburgh, only an hour's train journey to the east.

The Lowlands are the cradle of the Scottish nation. It was the people of the Lowlands and their great leaders, who in the 13th and the 14th centuries won the struggle for Scotland's independence against the attempts of England's kings to make Scotland a province of England.

The Highlands are among the oldest mountains in the world. They reach their highest point at Ben Nevis. Many of the deep valleys between the hills are filled with lakes.

New York

New York, the largest city in the US is situated in the Mouth of the Hudson River. The centre of New York is Manhattan Island which at the same time is the oldest part of the city.

New York is one of the leading US manufacturing cities. The most important branches of industry are those manufacturing vehicles, paper and paper products, glass, chemicals and all kinds of machinery.

The city has a very busy traffic, its streets and highways being flooded with cars and buses. Numerous bridges link Manhattan Island with the opposite shores. The sea encircles many of the city's areas, and ships go over or under New York traffic.

There are about 8 million inhabitants in New York. Among them one can meet people of almost all nationalities who came here during the immigration in the 19thand the beginning of the 20th century. As they came to the US mostly through the port of

New York, many of them stopped in the city, and since people of the same nationality tend to live together, they formed something like "cities within a city".

Higher Education

The two oldest universities in England are Oxford and Cambridge. These date from the Middle Ages. Each consists of selfgoverning residential colleges. The teaching is based on the tutorial system as well as lectures. Oxford and Cambridge have a special role in England as seminaries of the ruling class. The child of wealthy parents goes from private preparatory school to public

school from which he goes to the universities. The cost of education is so high that not many can afford entering universities.

With the advance of industrialization in the 19й century and the growth of manufacture, technicians and scientists were needed. The older universities did not produce them. So science classes were set up in industrial centres and they developed into either technical colleges or the "Modem Universities" (London, Manchester, Birmingham).

These modern universities were built generally in the middle of the large industrial cities.

There is no single body or organisation responsible for the planning and development of higher education as a whole in Britain. Every University is autonomous. The regulations differ from University to University.
