HISTORY OF TRAFFIC LIGHTS

е

1.лOn 10 December 1868, the first traffic lights were installed outside the British

Э

Houses of Parliament in London, by the railway engineer J. P. Knight. They resembled railway signals of the time, with semaphore arms and red and green gas lamps for night use. The gas lantern was turned with a lever at its base so that the appropriate light faced traffic. It exploded on 2 January 1869, injuring or killing the policeman who was operating it.

81

2. The modern electric traffic light is an American invention. As early as 1912 in Salt Lake City, Utah, policeman Lester Wire invented the first red-green electric traffic lights. On 5 August 1914, the American Traffic Signal Company installed a traffic signal system on the corner of East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. It had two colors, red and green, and a buzzer, based on the design of James Hoge, to provide a warning for color changes. The design by James Hoge allowed police and fire stations to control the signals in case of emergency. The first four-

deployed in Wolverhampton in 1927. In 1923, Garrett Morgan patentedАГНИhis own version. The Morgan traffic signal was a T-shaped pole unit that featured three hand-

way, three-color traffic light was created by police officer William Potts in Detroit,

Michigan in 1920. In 1922, T.E. Hayes patented his "Combination traffic guide and traffic regulating signal" (Patent # 1447659).

3. Automatic control of interconnected traffic lights was introduced March 1922 in

Houston, Texas. The first automatic experimental traffic lights in England were

cranked positions: Stop, go, and an all -directional stop position. This third position

halted traffic in all directions to give drivers more time to stop before opposing traffic

ка

started. Its one "advantage" over others of its type was theеability to operate it from a

distance using a mechanical linkage.

т

о

4. The color of the traffic lights representing stop and go might be derived from

и

those used to identify port (red) and starboard (green) in maritime rules governing

right of way, where the vessel on the left must stop for the one crossing on the right.

бл

5. Countdown timers on traffic lights were introduced in the 1990s. Though

и

б

uncommon in most American urban areas, timers are used in some other Western

Hemisphere countries. Timers are useful for drivers/pedestrians to plan if there is enough time to attempt to cross the intersection before the light turns red and

conversely, the amount of time before the light turns green.

THE HISTORY OF THE ESCALATOR

(By Mary Bellis)

1. An escalator is a conveyor type transportи device that moves people. It is a moving staircase with steps that move up бor down using a conveyor belt. However, the escalator began as an amusement and not as a practical transport. The first patent relating to an escalator-like machine was granted in 1859 to a Massachusetts man for

his moving stairs or inclinedаяelevator as he called it. In 1895 a moving stairway elevated passengers on a conveyor belt at a 25 degree angle.

a steam driven unit (установка, аппарат). On March 15 1892, Jesse Reno patented

2.

The escalator as we know it was later re-designed by Charles Seeberger in 1897,

нн

who created the name 'escalator' from the word 'scala', which is Latin for steps and

the word 'elevator', which had already been invented.

3.

ро

Charles Seeberger, together with the Otis Elevator Company produced the first

commercial escalator in 1899 at the Otis factory in Yonkers, N.Y. The Seeberger-Otis

кт

woodenеescalator won first prize at the Paris 1900 Exposition Universelle in France.

Jesse Reno's Coney Island ride success briefly made Jesse Reno into "the" escalator

л

designer and he founded the Reno Electric Stairways and Conveyors company in

Э1902.

4. Charles Seeberger sold his patent rights for the escalator to the Otis Elevator Company in 1910, who also bought Jesse Reno's escalator patent in 1911. Otis then came to dominate escalator production, and combined and improved the various designs of escalators.

88

5. Unfortunately, escalator is not only a convenient means of transportation. Each year, some 7,000 accidents occur on escalators. Most of these are falls, but about 1,200 of them due to an article of clothing, shoes, feet or hands becoming caught in the equipment. Escalators are not designed to automatically stop in such an instance; instead, a red button is typically located at both the bottom and top of the escalator to be pressed for an emergency stop.
