In a moment the girl threw her apron over Greycoat and he was in prison. He cried and called his mother but the little girl carried poor Greycoat home. She put him into a cage, and though Greycoat jumped up and down and worked hard all day, he could not get out. The children put the cage on the veranda. Siccatee saw her Little Greycoat from the top of a tree. Sometimes she came up to his cage and talked to him.
Now she thought only about Greycoat. Every night when all was still Siccatee came and she gnawed the bars of the cage with her little sharp teeth. But she could not set her baby free.
Every night she tried again and again to break those cruel bars. Every time when his mother came, Greycoat’s little heart was full of hope and when she went away he cried. Then there was one cold night - so cold that the little baby squirrel shook with cold. Siccatee sat as close to the bars of the cage as she could sit. She tried to warm little Greycoat with her own little body. And though the side which was near his mother was warm, his other side was cold.
The cruel bars and the cold night were too much for Greycoat. Suddenly he fell on the floor of his prison and lay cold and still.
It was a great blow for Siccatee. She ran round and round the cage and she called her baby. Then she put her tiny little paw through the cage and tried to wake him up. But Greycoat did not answer. At last Siccatee lay down by the cage, put one little paw through the bars and lay as still as Greycoat.
And when the children came in the morning, they found two dead Squirrels – the baby squirrel inside the cage and the mother squirrel outside.
The children did not understand how cruel it was to take a free wild animal away from the open air, from the beautiful forest and trees, and to put him into the cage

READING
Task 2. Read the paragraphs about the animals.
19
A. We may see hares in warm and cold countries. The hare is a small animal.
Its fur is thick; its tail is very short but its ears are very long. The hare is very timid and he's afraid of everything. It makes its home in the grass. In the daytime the hare is there. At night it goes to the fields to look for food. Its food is corn, vegetables and grass. It also likes to gnaw the bark of trees and spoils it. In the morning the hare comes back to its home. Thee it is safe because the color of its fur is the same as the color of the grass and the leaves. At first signal of danger the hare runs away.
B. The fox is an animal with thick red fur and a beautiful bushy tail. Its home is
in the forest or in the water- meadow. It likes places with high grass. In the daytime the fox hides in its burrow and at night it hunts. The best food for the fox is meat, so it kills small animals and eats them. It eats mice, rats and hares. When the fox cannot find meat, it eats berries in the forest. Sometimes when the fox is very hungry it goes to a village and tries to get a hen or a duck which it likes most of all. The fox is very cunning and clever animal.
C. The wolf is an animal that resembles both a dog and a fox. We may see
wolves in Europe, Asia and America. The wolf makes his den in the forest far away from the houses of men. Here in the summer the wolf lives and eats birds, hares and other small animals. During the day he hides in his den and at night he hunts. In summer wolves hunt each for himself, but in winter they gather in large packs. When wolves are hungry they become very bold. They even come near villages and attack sheep, cows and horses.
D. The brown bear is a large animal. His coat is thick and rough. He has a short
neck, his head is big and his tail is very short. The brown bear lives in the forest. He likes to make his home in a hollow tree. He eats fruit which he finds in the forest. He also likes honey and often spoils the hives of the wild bees. During the winter months the brown bear sleeps. He lies in a den where he makes a bed of leaves for himself. When spring comes the bear wakes up and begins to walk about the forest.
E. The elephant is the largest of all land animals. He lives in the deep forest of
Asia and Africa. In these forests, which we call jungle, the trees grow thick and high. The elephant likes the deep shadowy part of the forest and looks for the coolest places. He likes to bathe and can stay near the water for hours. The elephant like the camel can hold water in his stomach. When he wants to bathe and there is no water nearby, he puts his trunk in his mouth, gets the water from it and throws it over the body. The trunk of an animal is to him what the neck to other animals. It is very long but he can move it easily. The trunk is also a nose to him. The trunk is an arm and a hand for the elephants too. Thanks to the trunk the
20
elephant can pick fruit from high trees. The elephant likes to eat the fruit in the forest and also the leaves and young branches of the trees.
F. The lion is bold, fierce and very strong. The home of the largest Lions is far
away in the mountains and the Great Plains of Africa. The lions also live in Asia but they are not as large and strong as the Lions of Africa. The lion has a long mane and his skin is of a yellow color. The lioness is smaller than the lion and has no mane. She makes her home in the deepest part of the forest and there she lives with her Cubs. In the daytime the lion is in his den but when the sun is going down he goes to hunt. He walks very softly and makes no noise. When the lion is very hungry, he may walk over the plains even in the daytime.
G. The giraffe is the tallest of over animals. Its head is about 15 or even 18 feet
above the ground. The giraffe’s skin has many brown spots on it and it looks like
sunbeams among the leaves. It helps the giraffe to hide from the enemies. The giraffe has two little horns. Its legs are so long that when it lies down, it must kneel first on one knee, then on the other. The giraffe has a very long neck and a long tongue. Thanks to its neck and tongue, the giraffe can eat the leaves from high trees. The tongue, like the trunk of the elephant, is an arm and a hand to the giraffe. Like the camel, the giraffe has four stomachs and it can go from six to seven months without water. The giraffe’s home is Africa.
H. In some parts of the world there are large deserts. There are no trees and no
water there. Travellers must take food and water with them. The only animal that can walk through the desert is the camel. He can go without food for a long time and besides he can carry heavy loads. People call the camel “the ship of the
desert”. The camel is very big, he has one or two humps on his back, short ears and
the long tail. The camel's humps hold fat and his stomach holds water in 12 Deep Pockets. Each pocket has a mouth which closes, and the food does not mix with water. When the camel wants some water, he can get it out of the pockets. The camel's food is grass and branches of trees.
